Do animations make a game bad? I mean think about it. If Rondo comes down the court and steals the ball from derek fisher from behind,...In real life wouldn't derek fisher stumble slightly in a Wtf motion before taking off after the ball. In a sense i don't think 2k's animations were bad i think they brought life to the game because they were reasonable what do you guys think?

Re: All DO animations necessarily make a game bad
Like ace said, some animations are bad. But the ones that really irk me are the ones where the CPU makes me attempt a block and I get called for a foul.#HeatNation

Re: All DO animations necessarily make a game bad
it all depends on how you define "canned." certain types of animations need to be "canned" because there is a very specific way that movement is performed (jump shots, layups, dunks, spin moves, etc.)...these types of movements will always be "canned" or "predetermined" because they are so specific. Incidental animations (like contact, bumping, stumbling, tripping) - these types of animations can be physics-based.
Basketball is a game that requires "canned" animations more than any other sport because the movements in basketball are much more complex and varied than most sports. Think about it...in football and baseball there are really only very basic movements that need to be implemented - running, catching, etc. for the most part all people run the same way. But the game of basketball has so many different ways you can shoot the ball, dribble the ball, etc...there is a personal "style" who how players move. because of these specific movements, there will always be some canned animation in basketball games.Comment

Re: All DO animations necessarily make a game bad
In respects to your comment but i just can't agree with it,..I mean sure 2k10 had some cheeser tactics but some things just can't be done based on your position,.say if a shooting guard approaches a center straight up skill should determine the animation in 2k it did somtimes however sometimes it would go into a foul i think it has to be in relation to how a player is positioned if you are attacked at the rim and your slightly turned blocking the shot has become difficult..and in 2k i love dhow some blocks made your center call or drop back akwardly even after he blocked the shot it showed the physics and it was reasonable based on whom it was. Say for instance dalembert blocking Lebron's dunk he stumbled back . WHen i was playing a game with a friend..it seemed logical both players stumble... it was canned yes but it was reasonable and realistic at the same time we know dalembert won't block all of Lebron's dunks but it was a moment that arose based on my body positionComment

Re: All DO animations necessarily make a game bad
Animations are what makes a Basketball video game look like a real life NBA Basketball game it brings order to the game itself, canned animations are a different thing all together because they take aways control from the user and the actions becomes more like a choreographed dance with a predetermined result they may look pretty but it takes control away from the user, 2k said this year that they have removed canned animations and all animations can be broken so hopefully we get more control this year.PSN=Coolcas7Comment

Re: All DO animations necessarily make a game bad
If there was a way to lose the canned animations while keeping it looking as good as 2k looks right now, I would be all for it. I just don't think it can be done right now. Elite's trying to go with more physics-based gameplay but it doesn't look nearly as good as 2k.Does a cheetah stretch before it chases its prey?

I understand where your coming from but in real life, i've been playing ball ont he court and someone might come steal the ball from me as they do id stumble off balance briefly when getting crossed i'd stumble back,..i'm not in control of my movements though i struggle to get back in control. That iwas where canned animations come into liking because your not suppose to be able to control yourselfComment

Re: All DO animations necessarily make a game bad
i guess i am a sucker for animations. Look at 2k right now compared to games in the past like NBA2k1 or 2k2, animations give it that authentic look.Comment
