The presentation is probably the one thing 2k12 has on 2k11. The player models and graphics look pretty much the same in both games, although 2k11 looks a little lighter IMO. The big intros for games that 2k12 has isn't as broadcast like as 2k11's is. 2k11 shows players coming into the arena, coaches talking in the locker room, players in the locker room, things you'd see during a real NBA broadcast.
Presentation isn't that important though. It's the gameplay that changes things.
2k11 feels smooth, the fast players are faster than the slow players, the players with a higher vertical can leap higher than the players who can't jump as high, wide open shots are made, contested shots are made at a reasonable rate, players play like themselves.
2k12 feels clunky, there is no differential in athleticism at all, wide open shots are often missed, contested shots are made more often then they should, and players play out of their games.
Another kind of irrelevant thing is 2k11's stamina bar is much easier to read than 2k12's is

My Player mode may start you with a higher level player and give you more options for advertising yourself and your charisma and stuff, and the lead up to the draft may be more in depth, but the gameplay is not. In 2k12, I often find myself demanding the ball, because my teammates(ie Nate Robinson) will do iso dribbling moves until the clock runs down, when they pull up.
In 2k11, your teammates(while still not brilliant) will give you the ball if you're open. Fast breaks also feel much smoother in 2k11.
A serious issue I run into with 2k12(which is really the gamebreaker for me) is a huge framerate lag during My Player and sometimes Association. Around my 5th or so game in My Player, the framerate began to get terrible. It was impossible to play(on Xbox btw). I have never run into that problem with 2k11.
Also, I may just not be observant, how do you run anything other than the basic plays(quick pick and roll, iso, post up, get open) in 2k12? The play calling(pre patch) was so much easier in 11! Adding to that, the pick and roll in 2k12 is absolute garbage.
And who's brilliant idea was it to take out many of the Blacktop options and put in the Legends Showcase?
The NBA's Greatest is a very fun mode, and is probably the best draw of the entire game. Although there are too many Lakers (I'm from Boston
