Some more videos I made regarding this subject (already posted them in the Wishlist thread, but figured they should be in this thread as well). Hopefully this will be addressed in 2k13.

I appreciate your extensive work on this topic. I feel these threads with this visual information could serve as a potentially very helpful reference for anyone looking to cite specific issues with 2K12.

That said, as a viewer of these videos, my respectful suggestion would be to lessen the amount of times you run part of the same animation in slow motion over and over again. I understand wanting to ensure the poor animation is clear and apparent, but I think we can view it better than you think we can. Running through in its entirety in full speed then showing it entirely in slow motion seems like it'd be more effective and easier for the viewer to digest. I almost get frustrated watching some of these clips because I want to see them play out, but they keep getting re-wound and partially ran again. I think it's important to remember we're able to rewind clips as well, so if we miss something in the one slow motion replay, we can just run it back.

Anyway, about one specific portion of that clip above, Nick Collison's dunk attempt at 3:09, I'm not sure that one fits with the other poor animations. If it's a user-controlled Collison, that likely means this was a Turbo+Shoot combo. As such, the user was looking for a dunk attempt. However, most players are not terribly proficient at dunking with their left hand. Therefore, the shots the user could have chosen from in that scenario would seem to be a left-handed bank layup or a right-hand dunk attempt (2K began accounting for strong-handedness on dunks a few years ago). Of course, knowing 2K12, if a layup was attempted, Collison would have just made it as difficult as humanly possible.

So that's my feelings on Collison's right handed-ness on that dunk attempt. I don't actually have an issue with his mini-hop step gather in that case either. Guys like Collison will often need that little gather to dunk when catching the ball in a closed space, even if they were on the move before the catch. In real life, it probably would have been smoother for Collison to simply lay that ball home. Even in 2K12 land, I think the smart thing would have been a lefty finish, as opposed to a dunk.

Aside from that, I'm with you on most everything else.

As much as I played this game I can say that it looks like all the bad layup and dunk selections are purposely done to create a higher chance of misses and blocks. It is obvious at this point hopefully they can just make us miss the layups in 2K13 realistically instead of taking control away from us and making us go to an akward layup, stop momentum or go to wrong hand that makes no sense at all. Make the defense rotate or anticipate ahead of time to make me shoot a tough layup to up the degree of difficulty. Don't take control away from the user and make us shoot these akward layups straight into a defender when we had the open lane. It doesn't look good at all.

I can't stand when my player does a tomahawk dunk with a defender right behind him.

This is a very good point. But also thank you, OP for your work capturing this.

Fixing this will improve the game tremendously.

I notice these annoying moments too often and the OP's video captures are brilliant. Thanks for posting them.

Another reason why I sold 2k12 days after buying it. The crappy layup animation so I had to settle for Live 10 again. I'm hoping they get this fixed in 2k13 'cos I'm burned out on crappy Live 10.

In the OP, the last video - sefolosha wasn't going to make that layup anyway, we all know he gets scared around the basket if anybody is nearby lol

The only way around these is to do hop step layups. Using the right stick and pointing left or right (assuming you'd do a left or right layup) never works well.

So the question is which way are you pointing the shooting stick when you do a lay up? only way you will ever do a floater is if you are holding the left trigger and moving the right stick away from the basket, the first vid if you point the right stick to 1 oclock you should have gone right not left...sounds like a players error to me though the animations do need some work

heh heh...i definitely was not holding left trigger to execute a floater - the game was just giving me bad animations. it's a real issue.

the direction you move the stick also doesn't matter a lot of the time...if a defender is nearby, your player will often get sucked in the direction of the defender rather than the direction you pointed.

Will 2k have several option control schemes (i.e. shotstick, set 1 classic etc. like in 2k12) ?

I dont wanna get flamed in this thread but i really dont have the same problem most of you guys are having. When i still had the game i could execute the layup i wanted with the hand i wanted 90% of the time. However sometimes i would be driving to the hole and my guy would pull up for a jumper.

Try the tutorial in practice mode it teaches you all about it.

I'm not saying it happens on every layup attempt. but it happens enough to be an issue. what i notice is that the layup animations are decent when there are no defenders around...but as soon as defenders enter into the equation, you start getting some junk layup animations.
