Yea, this issue is all over the place. Some folks seeing it/some not. its a weird bug. Goes to show what a couple of lines of bad code can do.

After a few games I have noticed that the announcer uses my name like 80% of the time. I haven't really heard him use my nickname, at least not that often.

this bug was driving me so mental, that I just gave up and changed my player's name to Malik Smooth.

now when everyone calls me Smooth every game, I feel like they are calling me by my name. My Player just must have gotten called "Smooth" by his older brother at a young age for liking non-chunky peanut butter and it has stuck ever since...like a "Popeye" Jones, "jellybean" bryant etc....

Only work around I can see in the career mode probably will happen when the REDitor program comes out hopefully sometime in December with it you can mess around with the audio files and have them call you by your jersey number instead of a nickname.

A workaround should not be necessary. Clearly it's a bug that must affect just some of the names in the 2k database. It's also all over the bug/glitch thread. This is something 2k will hopefully patch with the 1st one they put out.

Is "Boomer" even in the 2k name database. If not, then they are suppose to say your nickname.

I once drafted a guy in one of the older 2K games(2K9 I think) named Boomer Smalls, and I liked him so much that I make him every year. 'Smalls' is still in the audio database. It sounds weird when the announcers call everyone else by their last name, but call me B-train.

Re: Y the nick name calling

It's not a bug. The name database is misleading. There is a varying amount of coverage for different names. That is why people experience it to different degrees. If you make a guy named Bob Westbrook, the commentators will probably never use your nickname because there's a ton of lines for 'Westbrook.' A name with less coverage you might hear the name in some lines but mostly nickname. It is clearly a priority system.

Not sure what's so hard to understand.

Re: Y the nick name calling

I figured they implemented the nick name to make the commentary more dynamic. For example, in previous 2k's they wouldn't mention if I was the leading the league in Scoring even though would show that I was. Now they will say my nick name and mention if I'm top 2 in a category. Also they will talk about what I said in my press conference the game before. I think this was the only way 2k could have implemented this in the commentary and this is why they primarily will say your nickname.

I'm sure they will improve it later in the series or next gen. It may not be 100% realistic, but commentary is more detailed than ever.

I'm fine with it. They say my full name sometimes. The PA announcer will say my full name sometimes too.

It's a bug my friend. The reason I know is because I CAN RECREATE THIS BUG. See, by your logic, the database is flawed because there may not be a ton of lines for a particular name. But if that is indeed the case, then how come I can create the exact same player, bio and all. Place him on a play now roster and the commentators and more specifically, the ARENA ANNOUNCER calls his NAME. Not his nickname. Oh, the commentators refer to his nickname every now and then, just like they should, but the arena announcer never uses the nickname. I did this same test on season mode, association, and online association. Not once did the game not recognize my name. In my career, it doesn't work. Not to mention that if you change the nickname in my career to something else, the arena announcer for home games will call everyone who scores by the new nickname you have chosen. The database is not flawed as it has been the same database for years and I myself have been using the same name for my "my player" for years. In 2k11 and 12, no problems what-so-ever.

In 2K13 they added a lot more commentary with the nicknames in it, where before they wouldn't have said anything.

I didn't mention the PA.. there may be an issue with it preferring nicknames. But not commentary.

I don't know about you guys, but I like it when they say "The Wizard" for my guy all the time. I think it's hilarious. Now, "Mr. Wizard" would have been much better, but whatever.
