My GAWD!!!!! Everything that has been said has helped me immensely online. I took all the tips and went online w/ the Nets (a team I never played with before). After 2 double digit wins I think I might have a grasp on defense. Now it could've been the cats I was playing against we're scrubs (both had over .500 records) but a lot of issues I had before on D is now gone. Bout to hop on a pick another random team and see what happens. This thread needs to be stickied.....

Re: nba 2k13 everything Defense
Coaching sliders do effect what goes on, on the court. Now the shot tendency coach sliders are debatable whether or not they effect gameplay.
Def Pressure means how fast (or hustle) around on defense.
Help D means how often other players look to help on defense.
Defensive settings:
Play tight on off ball means they will play tight but rarely help out, while deny means they will not help out on D.
On ball, play tight is closely guarding the ball handler, moderate is a good option as it gives some space but also protects the drive as well.
I personally use moderate for everyone that is not an actual 3pt threat. Then I usually play tight or deny ball (off ball).
Now the Help D slider works in conjunction with the def. settings.
Also RS on defense works wonders, keep it pressed towards the ball even when a pass is being made, it will help you get tip passes more often."Most people would learn from their mistakes if they weren't so busy denying them"Comment

Re: nba 2k13 everything Defense
play intense defense all game long. be relentless, even if they take the lead...stay strong and hound them
lay off the turbo button, unless u start to lose ur opponent and u need to stay in front of him. always hold the power defense stance button(r2). stay close ur opponent and get into his chest, show him that ur not afraid of his little corny dribble moves or his player blowing pass u and getting to the hole. move side to side like a linebacker and cut ur opponent off and also anticipate his movements. these guys are predictable so if they're moving left trust me they'll move right...etc...u get the picture
i play mostly man but i use zone too. if u have to, use zone all u want and shut superstars down. watch out for the open shooters tho....and you'll also give up some offense rebounds ....but its effectiveComment

This year I learned the hard way DONT REACH. I love the defense this year. Makes you move your feet and with slight flicks of the right stick you can dominate a ball handler.Comment

For me, the two biggest keys to successful defending are the two A's: awareness and angles.Comment

Re: nba 2k13 everything Defense
Hi,
This is the first NBA title I have had in years. I think the last basketball title I had was the one by Tecmo on the SNES!! Obviously a lot more basic than today's outings but a great game nonetheless! Anyway, I am from the UK and my understanding of the game is severely limited. Not really into watching ever since the days of Bogues, Stockton, Barkley and co, So completely out of touch with the todays players. I think NBA 2K13 is a great game but fear It may take a while to get used to the terminology, plays and stuff as I'm clueless at present.
What I need (most of all) is defensive help. Bare in mind I'm playing on Pro and level and lose most of my matches, so you have an idea how bad I am!! The CPU seems to get past me too easy when defending 1 on 1. I use the LT, RS for hands up and lunging but if they pull a skill/move to either side of me it's all over. I use the sprint button but that seems a bit redundant. Do I hold LT to track my man? Please help me before i smash my controller!! Also, how do get my my CPU Controlled defenders to stick with their man and stop double teaming.
Any help from you 2K Vets would be greatly appreciated!Comment

Re: nba 2k13 everything Defense
Great thread, good tips from everyone
I want to add that understanding your own roster make up also makes a huge difference for defense. For example:
If you have a line up of:
Shumpert
Jr Smith
Brewer
Amare
Chandler
You might want to be Jr Smith for majority of the defensive posession. Unless his man is sitting in the corner doing nothing.
In a scenario where the opposing team has a great SG and a so so SF (lets say the lakers with kobe and artest) You must go to defensive settings and switch Brewer onto Kobe and Smith on to Ron Ron.
About the steals, i play on hall of fame sim offline association and avergae about 9 steals a game but i can go a whole game without clicking the steal button. RS towards ball handler and putting a body in the passing lane are the only two ways i try to get steals.Comment

In general for OFF ball D:
SAG OFF, if they couldn't even hit a barn door, like Greg Anthony;
MODERATE, if they have a rating below 80 from 3 but are decent mid range shooters (70+) like LaMarcus Aldridge;
TIGHT, if you're playing someone who has a 80+ rating from 3;
DENY BALL, if TIGHT isn't working on the sharpshooter or if it's a star. If it's a star, toggle between moderate and deny ball, depending on whether you're playing DWade or Durant.
In general for ON ball D:
SAG OFF, if it's Greg Anthony;
MODERATE, if you're playing someone who could beat you off the dribble and can shoot the mid range, e.g. DWade, LBJ
TIGHT, if you're playing a sharpshooter who has no business taking several dribbles, e.g. Korver, Ray Allen
As for manually playing on ball D:
- Lay off the LT, until the ball handler looks like he's about to take the shot, or if the player looks like he might have the step on you. If you just hold it all game, you're going get beat off the dribble multiple times.
- Use the left stick to track your man. Direct the ball handler where YOU want him to go. If he's relentlessly attacking, back off. Keep him away from the middle and towards the baseline. Force him to his weak hand. If you slide to much in one direction, switch to another defender to get back in position. If the ball handler has already made a move, use LT and RT to attempt to get back.
- If it's obvious that the ball handler is trying to make a pass, hold the right stick in the direction of the pass to put your hand up, and the CPU defender of the pass receiver may try to intercept the ball. When someone's lost their dribble, CROWD them with LT and deny their pass by pushing the right stick (in any direction).
-If you want your CPU teammates to stop double teaming, go to def settings and set double team to never. If it still happens, decrease the help D. If it STILL happens, go to coach profiles and set double teams to zero.

Re: nba 2k13 everything Defense
another thing is rebounding. first few games i was gettin TOO heated because i could not rebound for nothin on the defensive end. if you actually take time out to control your guy and HIT the L TRIGGER, you get better results because you are actually boxing out. it helps out and it feels rewarding to me when im able to get a stop and grab that rebound
That's messed up. As of now when you put double team always on a star player, when they get the ball the double comes immediately. So if lebron is bringing the ball up the court the double immediately comes and people just go right by it. They should have it where the user can choose when the double comes. As of now its just not effective.

Or switch off ball and take a defender and drop him down to the free throwline so all you give up is a long 2.Add me om PSN for a good game of basketball!

Re: nba 2k13 everything Defense
I quoted this from another thread I originally posted this in
First of all let off the LT. Only use LT the first 2 seconds after you body up the post player, then let it go, use RS to try and muscle him away from the hoop. Soon as he goes for his shot, move the RS AWAY from his body. That will make your defender lunge up in the air and body him up without a foul usually.
For Running hooks, as soon as he goes to make his move to start running, run to the spot he's going. Don't run with him, run to where he is going to shoot his jumphook and press y, beat him to the spot.
Hands up defense in the post is usually good for faceup players. Instead of committing to a full contest just use hands up because you can move with ya hands up if the faceup player hits you with a pump fake and tries to blow by you. Also hands up is decent after they get a offensive rebound.
Also on faceup drives, try beating him to the spot you think he's going. Go for a charge or use the lunge animation by moving the RS away from the defender like I told you earlier.Add me om PSN for a good game of basketball!

Thank-you for the tips. This will improve my game!! Damn, i can't get any worse!!
I will put them into practice and let you know how i get on.Comment

Re: nba 2k13 everything Defense
from another thread:
i fight to keep my defender in position to contest and not try to block. seems to get better results. after all, in real life most contests are not attemps to block the shot but to pressure the shooter.
the only time i go for the block now is if i feel i know the shot is comming and have a good chance at it. even when you are in position and the contest animation has started, its best to let it play out, the block animations starts from the begining and a well timed contest seems to get better results at affecting the shooter than a late block attempt.Comment
