Re: Is it safe to say VC was a horrible idea?
I am hooked on the MyCAREER mode. I just want to be able to do sweet dunks and drain 3's without having to play 4 full seasons to get the VC to do it. I only play MyCAREER and it's the only reason I bought 2k13. I don't see why you care if I want my guy to be a 90 overall faster than grinding to become an 80 overall after 3 seasons. I also don't understand how me buying VC and upgrading my player "takes the fun out of the mode". It's actually making the mode more fun for me due to this.
Once again. It's a great idea, but they just implemented it poorly in a few areas in its first year.
But here's the thing tho...
I get all that. Hell yeah, I'm actually excited to FINALLY get myplayer better than a 66 in his first year and ****. But what are my means of doing so? Paying money (not gonna do it, i got kids and **** man...) or playing a blacktop mode for an hour or playing association. How does Association give me more points for MY PLAYER than MY PLAYER gives me points for MY PLAYER?
and on top of that... WHY THE HELL DO I HAVE TO BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET TO CHANGE MY CLOTHES?!
it's like... real life DOES happen, people. my internet got cut off so i'm stuck wearing ankle socks and all of my time playing the game doesn't even matter because as soon as my internet comes back online i have to start over because i need to use VC?
point in case... everything you want to do in a video game should be on the disc when you purchase it. unless it's a game that was INTENDED to be played online (COD) you know? I bought the game expecting Myplayer to be what it was the last 3 years, a standalone game mode that i can play forever and ever in my own little universe and everything is included. i didn't wanna play any other game modes and i shouldn't have to. they said this year that myplayer was the most popular game mode in the entire game. so you screw those people over and piss them off with this horrible VC system and penalize them for not having an internet connection?
super lame, bro.Comment

Re: Is it safe to say VC was a horrible idea?
I'm not gonna lie i use VC from other modes in myplayer. But only before I play my first game. I upgrade my players athleticism before I play my first game cause players don't get more athletic(well from being an unathletic guy to a super athlete like King James) once they enter the league. I also upgrade basic skills that are in the 30s like medium range jump shots and post moves. I don't max these out though and after every upgrade before I get finished I look at my players overall and make sure he isn't an 80+ overall.Comment

It's year 1 of a potentially great long-term feature.. I'm sure it will improve.
The last thing 2k should do is stop trying new things like this and just keep recycling the basic game with small gameplay improvements for hardcores.. that's the way to get complacent and be knocked off the top eventually.Comment

Re: Is it safe to say VC was a horrible idea?
disclaimer: i only play myplayer so idk about the other areas of the game.
at first i thought vc was a terrible idea but now i just think they could've implemented it a bit better.
personally, i don't care about buying the clothing because you keep those forever, but the cost should be proportionate to your actual contracts. even with me buying attributes i'm still finding the game challenging. being drafted as a lottery pick and being rated 60 overall is stupid. i created a guy and spent money to just get him to the way that i like to play (without maxing him out), ie: decent midrange, ball control etc. it's doesn't take much to put up lbj #'s but if you're on a ****ty team (which is probably the reality if you're drafted high) you're going to struggle regardless if you're rated 99 or not. for instance i'm a sf on the suns and we still have a losing record and close to the end of the season we may not even make it to the playoffs! that's with me putting up 25/6/8 a game. so, if someone wants to max out their guy in the rookie season, they should be able to.
that being said, contracts are absolutely 'broken'. 500vc over 3 years as a lottery pick when you get the same amount at the bottom of the 1st round? contract expires and you're only offered like 600ish vc for a 4yr deal? ridiculous. at least give me a breakdown of how much each vc would equal as dollars (so you're not getting a 14mil vc contract) instead of vc being absolutely arbitrary.|| rv motion graphics. ||Comment

I really hope this isn't the direction gaming is going in. I'd expect this kind of thing from a free to play game, not a $60 AAA title.Bulls|Bears|Cubs| Blackhawks|Huskies|Horned Frogs|

Re: Is it safe to say VC was a horrible idea?
Look at what happened with Skyrim - DLC that was "exclusive" on the xbox for a month and that has not even been ported over to the PS3 yet...
Look at the "exclusive missions" you get for Assassin's Creed 3 on the PS3 but not on the other platforms.
It is bad enough with the PC version for 2k that basic modes are missing, but at least they don't charge the full $60 for that port.
2k said they had several people play multiple seasons in MyCareer ... but if that is so, why were none of the issues readily seen picked up on? Things like 500VC per year for a contract is something you should realize is broken after one season (if that)...
Is 2k even using the money they get from VC purchases to improve anything? With the quality of the recent roster updates, the issues with the shoes update and the multiple mistakes made on the court updates, do you think they hired any extra artist assets or did anything to improve the 2k13 experience? I doubt it.Comment

Re: Is it safe to say VC was a horrible idea?
I guess it depends on what you consider to be the fundamental purpose of VC. For me, it's not so much that VC was a horrible idea (as some have stated, it makes "business" sense, in a shallow way), but more that it shows how little respect 2k gives its player base.
I mean really, in what way has the introduction of VC actually improved the game in any way?
Let me list all the ways it has hurt the game.
- All your MyCareer characters all have the same name and look the same
- You can't adjust MyCareer sliders to fix what is an obviously broken game mode
- You're always online for MyCareer, which is a largely offline mode; there is nothing more frustrating than having to waiting ages for your info to be sent to the 2k servers
- Autosaving EVERYWHERE
- Accessories and players on Blacktop which were previously available now cost VC
Yes, if you don't have the time to grind out MyPlayer, you can buy yourself some upgrades to save yourself the time. But it's rather naive to think that was why 2k implemented the system, because the current system trades off so many bad things for that one good.
It was a shallow and cheap move by 2k, and it shows that for all the faith people put in 2k, all they can do is try and use and abuse them. I honestly think the introduction of this system will be the beginning of the end for NBA 2k. It's a clear sign that they're not interested in making the best basketball game possible, and instead are trying to find the best way to exploit their player base.Comment

Re: Is it safe to say VC was a horrible idea?
This isn't a feature, it's locking features that have been there for us all along behind the allure of a 'new feature' that really is just an extremely lazy and basic way to attempt to bring in more revenue after the initial purchase of the game. What new did this bring? All of our my players have to have the same likeness? Clothing options we've had all along are now locked until you turn in a sizable sum?
I really hope this isn't the direction gaming is going in. I'd expect this kind of thing from a free to play game, not a $60 AAA title.Comment

Re: Is it safe to say VC was a horrible idea?
Racking up VC your MyPlayer to play Blacktop 3v3 doesn't even feel worth it since the mode is such an incomplete tease. Full court 5on5 would have been a lot more fun, couple this with the fact that what we have now is essentially just a steal spamming, 3 chucking, turbo fest, I can't really think of a decent payoff.
The same goes for MyTeam. It'd be awesome to use your team against a friends, but since that option isn't available, and since the mode is so arcade like, racking up VC to buy players seems meaningless.
Developers can't dictate and control what a user player does, but within the game, there are things that need to be restricted, and those restrictions aren't present, so it makes the core essential element of video game, the gameplay, lackluster. The extra monetary investment placed upon this game that influences that element, is disappointing.
Good idea in a sense, but the overall execution falls through IMO.Comment

Re: Is it safe to say VC was a horrible idea?
That's different though, one disregarding any statements that might start console issues, those are extra content. Were being locked from content that not only were we entitled to with previous purchases but it's locked on the disc. DLC is an entirely different beast, if games are gonna lock us out from content on the disc with a cost that is disproportionate to the typical rewards and almost forces you to pay with actual cash on top of the initial $60 purchase, it's messed up, ethically and logically.Bulls|Bears|Cubs| Blackhawks|Huskies|Horned Frogs|

Re: Is it safe to say VC was a horrible idea?
You don't HAVE to pay anything for those extras, unlike a free to play game. You can earn it the old fashioned way, by playing. So you can't make the money-grubbing argument, you're not required to pay money. I think the primary reason to do such things is to give a sense of player progression and accomplishment. If you can just max out your player from the start, the game loses a lot I think - there's no progression. The mode is supposed to be somewhat like an RPG, not a sandbox as if you're a developer.
It's also not one mode, it encompasses them all. Your points are spread among accessories, my team players and my career progression. Which is awful.
The idea is a solid one but the implementation is absolutely horrible. Basics that we were being given for free now either costs money or a substantial time investment. I play games for entertainment, it shouldn't feel like a job. Couple that with VC not triggering everytime and if there is even a slight hiccup in your internet connection you lose out, it's just awful.Bulls|Bears|Cubs| Blackhawks|Huskies|Horned Frogs|
