Re: Best Starting Five to Fit Your Style?

I tend to like to have a balanced team across the board. So here goes

PG- Kyrie Irving: I like to have a guy at the point who can do it all. Pass, handle, drive, shoot, defend, and has athleticism. He needs to be a guy who isn't necessarily the best at any one thing, but is solid at everything and as a result is a very good player. Irving is the top of the line version of what I look for. If i weren't going for a star player then Jeff Teague, Mike Conley, or George Hill would work as well.

SG- Monta Ellis: although I would rather have Harden, he is unrealistic. So I defer to another combo guard here. I like my two guard to be one of 2 things. Either A: a great offensive creator and clutch shooter. Someone who can handle the ball well and play the point if need be. Creates off the dribble and spots up. Or B: a solid perimeter defender with length and strength who can match up with any perimeter player in the league one on one like Tony Allen. Ellis is in the first category. This gives me my go to guy on offense.

SF- Kawhi Leonard: My SF is the complement to my SG. If i have Ellis, the offensive minded player, I want a physical, long, athletic defender like leonard next to him to be my go to on ball defender. He also needs some form of shooting ability and Leonard has it. It came down to Leonard and butler for me. I chose Leonard because he has a slightly better jump shot.

PF- David Lee: I like to have my power forward to be an offensive minded rebounder who can play down low and give me another option on offense. Lee is an excellent post presence who can spread the D with his mid range shot at times, can rebound very well, and is a great passer from the post. He gets the nod over KG who also does these well due to KGs age which is a bigger negative than Lees defense.

C- Marc Gasol: Center is the cog that makes my defense work. I need someone who is a top post defender, and is no slouch when it comes to other areas of the game. Marc Gasol is a masterfully skillful center and in my opinion the second best in the league. He is one of 4 players I would even consider for the position and the most offensively well rounded of the four. The other three are deandre Jordan, Dwight Howard, and Tyson Chandler. If Noel were in the game he too would be on this list. But Gasol is the cream of the crop and is an elite player for my team.

6th man: SF Gordon Hayward: A good scorer off the bench.
Role: C Chris Andersen: Hustle guy on offense off the bench
Role: PG Luke Ridnour: reserve point guard
Role: SG Thabo Sefolosha: another perimeter defender if Leonard gets tired or in foul trouble
BE: PF Udonis Haslem defensive minded bench player who can be a quality player against teams with multiple post players.
    BE: PG Kendall Marshall Prospect
    BE: C Miles Plumlee Prospect

Re: Best Starting Five to Fit Your Style?

      PG - Tyreke Evans
      SG - Paul George
      SF - Nic Batum
      PF - David Lee
      C - Joakim Noah

      Bench Players

      Jerryd Bayless
      Rashard Lewis

I dont want to plan out too many bench players. My dream 5 includes several players who can play multiple positions. The PG can get to the rim and distribute. My wings can play elite D, and hit the three. 4 should be able to rebound those threes, and spread out. 5 should be able to play top notch D, also rebound, and be a good passer to those wings. Bayless and Lewis off the bench can play 1-4 in a pinch.

I do not go into the post too often, I love doing the P&R and drive and kick out for a long 2 or 3.

Nash - best P&R PG and pure shooter IMO
Jason Terry - For some reason I just can't miss with him
LeBron - Lock down defender, best player in the game.
Bosh - Love using a post player to shoot deep 2's
Amare' Stoudamire - Reunite him with Nash and the P&R offense.

I am a Sun's fan so fast paced play fits what I am comfortable with(not in a cheese way) but I like to run the floor, shoot 3's or long 2's on fast breaks. Run the P&R from all different spots on the floor, hardly ever post up with my back to the basket.

PG- Tony Parker: I like having a quick pg the can get to the paint and hit a floater or kick to the open player.

SG- Joe Johnson: A great scorer especially in the clutch, he can shoot off the dribble, catch and shoot, or create for others.

SF- Deng, Iggy, Shane Battier: I like my 3 to be able to guard your best wing and put my 2 on your other wing. So he needs to be a good defender and I like him to hit the mid range/3.

PF- Lamarcus Aldridge: I like my PF to be able to score in the post or in the pick and roll.

C- Dwight Howard, Larry Sanders, or Javale Mcgee: As you can see I like my C to be an athletic shot blocker that can rebound.

                  My actual Milwaukee Bucks association.

PG - Kyrie Irving - Young point who can control the floor, and score at will, if need be can take over a game.

SG - JR Smith - Might be inconsistent been when really hot, can make big things happen. Very athletic, which brings me with a dangerous backcourt.

SF -Joe Johnson - Shot maker, 50/50 chance either him or Kyrie would have the ball in clutch time.

PF - Ryan Anderson - Might not be the best rebounder, but he can get it done. Would be a huge plus as he can stretch the floor.

C - Anderson Varejao - Rebounding beast, very good defender with an okay close to midrange jumpshot.

                  Bench
PG - Jerryd Bayless - VERY streaky if hot, he can get lots of points.
SG -Tony Allen - Amazing defender
SF -Wesley Johnson - Athletic, can also hit the jumpshot.
PF -Glen Davis - Can give you a solid 10/10 every game, very post defender.
C- Larry Sanders - Blocking monster, can grab boards.
                  Boston Celtics
                  Pittsburgh Steelers
                  Memphis Grizzlies

Re: Best Starting Five to Fit Your Style?

                    Unrealistic starting 5:
PG: Chris Paul - Great passer & scorer, can shoot the 3, high basketball IQ
SG: Klay Thompson - Good defender, extremely dangerous from deep, good off-ball player
SF: Paul George - Can shoot the 3, great defender
PF: Kevin Love - Monster on the boards and can shoot the 3
C: Dwight Howard - Dominates the paint, great rebounder and rim protector

CP3, the ball dominant guard, would be surrounded by players who excels off-ball. He will be the main guy making plays. Klay Thompson is a good player off the ball so all he really needs to do is cut to the basket or spot up for 3. Paul George is an all-around player and will help to keep opposing players in check with his defense. Kevin Love helps to spread the floor for Dwight Howard and can be absolutely dominant on the boards with Howard. Howard will protect the rim and catch lobs from CP3 for easy points. If Love or Howard gets double teamed in the post, all they have to do is kick out the ball and let others spot up for a 3.

Re: Best Starting Five to Fit Your Style?

I'm about tough D, transition points, and a rock solid mid-range game. In trying to be somewhat realistic, I'm keeping my 5 fairly young (all <30). So, I'm guessing something like:

PG Wall - Speed for days, finishes at the rim, passes are on point. J's a work in progress, but with enough development it'll get there.
SG Iggy - Can shut his man down, as well as get out on the break and finish.
SF Deng - Another perimeter lockdown defender with a good mid-range game.
PF Ibaka - My defensive anchor. Can get out in transition and has a pretty decent jumper.
C K-Love - Cheating a little by putting him here, but I've already got Serge at PF. Board cleaner, gets the break going, and how many Cs can hit the 3 as a trailer?

Why aren't there more legends if it's indeed the 'best' starting 5?

                          I'd go

                          PG - LeBron James
                          SG - Stephen Curry

PG - Derrick Rose, Well rounded, can pretty much do it all but will be a distributor on my team.
                            SG - MJ, Duh.
SF - James Worthy, I love his scoring ability inside the arc. Pretty good all-around player.
PF - Shawn Kemp, Great athleticism, can give it to him on the block.
C - Marc Gasol, Good defender & rebounder, can stretch the floor, great passer & post game is efficient.
