    Gamespot Q&A 11-15-05

I thought this would have been up but nobody knew about it. Just a little something to keep ya'll occupied until the launch. Ironically, this part of the site looks....dead. In any case, I'm a optimistic when it comes to video games period. So just enjoy....

And finally, we have added a ton of animation into our crowd this year. Spectators stand and cheer or sit and boo, and they taunt visiting players when they are shooting free throws by waving their arms to distract them. They also stand and cheer for made three-point shots and rise to their feet in anticipation when a player is on a fast break.
IF (big IF) they get this right, that's an extremely nice touch.

Also, him touching on the rebounding was nice, but I haven't seen that from the videos. Rebounding looked the same to me.

I was listening to the commentary, and when Kerr was talking, it wasn't half bad in the video of Lebron vs the Warriors. I'm anticipating this game now... looking good.

We literally wanted to build "humans who play NBA basketball" with all of the complexities of human appearance and behavior.

you missed #1... EMOTION.. there is none.. zilch..

To build all these realistic arenas we started by tossing out all the arenas from current gen. Even though they are all authentic, they simply didn't scale up anymore. We worked really close with the NBA to gather exhaustive reference shots from every arena. We literally spent months gathering tens of thousands of photographs of every inch of each arena

sadly you messed up on the world champion spurs... were they simply not on TV enough???? jezzz

The photographers we worked with shot the images to detailed technical specifications so that we could use a process called photogrammetry to build the geometry. In this process, the images are analyzed by computer software that re-creates the objects in the scene to the exact dimensions of their real-life counterparts. Other reference images are then used for the surface textures. On top of all that, a team of very talented artists then puts the final finishing touches to each arena with a lot of attention to detail.

were these artists on break with the sbc center?

We have added in some signature jump shots as well to further highlight our focus on reality. To name a few, we have Wade's, KG's, Tony Parker's, and Shawn Marion shots in there, and they all show off the different shooting styles that the different NBA players have. Related to this, we have more than 40 signature free-throw routines, from Rip over Shaq to Jermaine O'Neal.

a knotch above VC in this regard... good job there!

LOL, Ruben calm down. Its just a tunnel. EA and 2k have both made mistakes in the past with their arenas. Its not like they have the Spurs in the Staples Center.

true, they have the jumbotron, the roof, and everything else right. they definetly deserve credit there.

lol. its all in good fun. they write about all this work theyve done with the NBA, the photographers and then the finishing designers..and then to see they mess up just alittle. i guess in a way its funny/frustrating.... not a huge deal. but since they made a huge deal, i thought i would

Its like I said in another post, the short development cycle meant that companies REALLY had to pick and choose what they would accentuate and what they would leave to next year. So once again we will probably have two good games, that if combined together would make an outstanding game.

EA's seems to really be improving the atmospheric elements of their games, now they just have to shore up the gameplay/A.I.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.
