Reading some reviews back having played over 20 games...

Slow day at work…so I was reading some LIVE for the 360 reviews back and can’t believe how ‘off’ some of them are.

NLGAMING used to be half decent at getting their reviews right…but their review is farcical now that I read it retrospective.

    Highlights below…!

NLGAMING: Sound looks to be imported from the current gen games. Marv Albert returns for commentary once again. Sound effects and the patented EA Trax also return. Nothing new or groundbreaking there.

My comment : the crowds are much louder…the crowds are much, much more responsive to runs etc…there’s a lot more lines of commentary from Marv and Kerr…so, BS again.

NLGAMING: “To get to the top of this pile I am declaring "shenanagans" on the computer AI; something I thought would have been addressed. Never in a Basketball video game, in the almost 20 years I've been playing them (going back to Atari 2600 Basketball) have I ever started a game down 26-2. But I have done it with NBA Live. I actually could not score a single bucket in a computer's 24 point run. And that's with actually being close enough to the hoop to lay it in. I missed shots that were 3 feet away. I could not believe it. I started to think it was my timing because the graphic engine was so choppy. And I wasn't playing on the higher difficulty modes either, nor were I using bad teams. Last I checked, the San Antonio Spurs could shoot a little.”

My comment : absolute BS. I am by no means a great player…and even I have never had a run like that to start a game. He says he played on the easier levels…which makes his claim incredible. On the easier levels, even my wife keeps the games close and she hardly even knows the controls. Missing 3 foot shots, can’t buy a bucket, 26-2 down…is the reviewer just a complete incompetent? Sorry, but you can’t hold that against the game…that you’re useless.

NLGAMING: “The computer doesn't apparently believe in jump shots in any difficulty mode past rookie.”

My comment: Simply amazing. The mid range game is excellent in this game. No wonder he didn’t bother to mention the dozens of SIG J’s…he didn’t even see any.

I’m by no means defending this game…but you do wonder if people actually play these things more than 30 minutes before writing their reviews.

NLGAMING gave NBA by SCEA for the PSP and 89…and I can tell you all that that game is the singularly worst NBA game I’ve ever played. Beyond bad.

Side note: This has been one of the major drawbacks of the Internet era…guys without qualifications suddenly becoming “journalists / reporters” and people taking their word as being qualified.

I don't think that some of these guy's really have interest in most of these games. That is the biggest flaw in my opinion. It's tough trying to enjoy a game that you have no interest in to begin with overall.

Having said that I believe Live and deservedly so got ripped more so for it's lack of features than actual gameplay. There are some that question that the gameplay but for the most part this 360 version was blasted because of it's bare and bones approach.

Another thing is EA should simply state to these people that for advanced realism play you must tweak the game in order for it to play right because we are too damn lazy to do it for you. But hey these guy's aren't paid to mess with sliders and other gameplay aspects that might make the gaming experience much better. They are paid to review what is sent to them as is right out of the box.

That's true. Event with that said, most reviews said nothing good about the game, except for the praise of the menu. However if you played this game for a hour you can tell that the spacing is great, better than any other game IMO. Also fast breaks are done really well, players fill the lanes. No mention of that anywhere. How tough it is to play on the road, the crowd and the atmosphere. No mention of that.

This is what they should do. Provide the time period they got to play the game. This will determine if its a initial impressions or full review. Also for goodness sakes please get someone to review the game that actually knows the sport. Alot of people, in fact most people buy games based on reviews. So alot of people miss out on a diamond in the rough, just because the reviewer didn't have or take time to fully review the product. I have to admit if I didn't love bball, I wouldn't have played it based on the reviews that are out there.
In closing the beauty of this game is the floor spacing of the players. I have not seen one review that mentions this.

I agree 100% sirjam. The spacing is great. Something that Inside Drive had so right as well. The atmosphere is unmatched by any sports game that I hvae ever played. It is flat out immersing. I'm enjoying this game more than I thought I would, and if I would have listened to the reviewers, I would have never even played it.

Is this a 360 or just a plain old Xbox review?

you know whats great about their crowds, that ive seen from 30 secounds of video. THey clap and stand to the arena music... Now only if they were that responive to actual gameplay, this games atmosphere would blow away all competition.

The main thing is, people have at least got to get something 'right' before going to publish it...whether that be a book, a newspaper article or on a web site.

Things like "the CPU has no mid range game" etc is simply wrong. Ultimately, it's the reviewer who loses all credibility.

Again, I've no idea how that site gave the first NBA for PSP by SCEA 89 / 100. It was beyond crap.

By far the highest score it got...and most places gave it 3/10 type scores.

That site also got it's review done first. You have to think "advertising" plays a role in these things.

RD, they definately respond to actual gameplay. Case in point, i was playing Memphis at Memphis, they were killing me, the crowd was... meh. But the game got tight, and the crowd got into every play. I had the ball w/ 8 seconds left, down by one, the crowd was on their feet w/ the "Defense" chant going. It was absolutely amazing. Especially when I drove the lane w/ Lebron, got doubled, but kicked it out to Ilgauskas who was wide fricken open, the crowd noise just died as the shot went up. It was beautiful.

I had a instance like that two. I love how you can actually draw and kick in this game. Even on the highest level.

The thing I wish to see in the future is a guy who is strictly into sports games to review nothing but sports games. What happens to often is a guy who's favorite game may be Spiro the Dragon gets asked to review Live and 2K. Thus failing to report on the little intracacies that a real fan might find such as sig Js and court spacing. He knows nothing about both because he does'nt even watch the sport to know. Or not enough.

Also, one thing no one has yet to consider and this goes for any game on the 360. Its only common sense to know that most of these websites/mags got they're 360s only weeks before it was released. Who knows how many 360s units each place recieved. I highly doubt MS gave these major publications more than 1 or 2 units, especially if they knew about the shortage beforehand. And with about 12 games to play and review for the following month, there is no way that reviewers thoroughly spent enough time with a game to give it a fair review. It shows whenever you read these reviews. You can clearly tell that most of them were rushed and to the point. Look at the December issue of EGM for example.

                              Absolutely.

And to make it worse, even the most objective of us can't help to see a game with "colored glasses"...either rose colored, or doo doo brown colored. I rented Live, and based off the general concensus, I pretty much went into it thinking the game was gonna be crap, and didn't look for the redeeming qualities, and thats exactly what I got out of my experience. Thats why I hate when reviewers trash games without digging past the surface.

Now that guys whos judgement I trust implicitely have dug a bit deeper, I'm actually a little hyped to rent it again...
