Re: Ask the devs a question

BTW - As you look at our screenshots that we post, when we say they're from in-game and not touched, I don't expect you guys to believe me. We've definitely had our history. But once again, that wasn't us.

The shots you'll see are in-game. Think what you want of the game, but know that the truth is the truth.

Pretty sure Sony has an exclusive on the PG skills.

Stephen, when did you and Mike begin working for EA? More specifically, when did you begin working on the NBA Live series?

It just peeves me that some people are so focused on bells and whistles, or the "cherry on top" so to speak.

This year, it seems (and I'm hoping) that the new dev team is focusing on getting the gameplay right first, so we have a solid game of basketball before worrying about adding the details like a towel boy or something. Know what I mean?

I want to make sure players play realistically, teams play realistically, and everything just meshes together in terms of what's happening on the court. Smart AI (like the auto subs and player rotations), making reads, passing out of double teams, using offensive plays, exploiting mismatches, no rubber banding defense or laser guided passes etc......also and make it all look good with improved and smoother animations and player models. Don't forget better ball trajectories and rim/net/ball physics and variations.

If they can improve stuff like that, I wouldn't complain about bench players not wearing warmups or if there's no towel boy on the sideline, or if players wern't wearing the correct shoes.

MLB The Show took this approach and it's paying off. The focused on gameplay in '08 and laid out a good foundation. This year they improved on that and also added more stadium details, like better crowds, more specific stadium authenticity, fans walking around etc.

If NBA Live wants to be the best (and it seems to be heading in the right direction), they need to lay the foundation of a solid basketball playing game first. Don't get me wrong, I love all the cool little details too, but you build the house first before decorating it.

If we're just worrying about gameplay, why not get 2k? I liked Live (haven't got it the past few years) because they had all the real "other stuff" and the gameplay was solid. I passed on Live in 07 because the gameplay has become a joke. Why can't we have the "other stuff" and get great gameplay? If we're not getting nothing, but gameplay, I mightest well stick with 2k.

Oh ok. Lol. Sorry, but you didn't say that. Lol. But I can care less about an online dynasty. As long as we can just play the game online, thats cool with me.

I'm just saying the presentation should be realistic. One thing that I will say Live always had right is the commetary. I can't think of any game, not Madden, 2k, any game, that has had better commentary than Live.

One thing I'm hoping for is when its a big game or the playoffs or a rival game, the commentators say something like "This is a big game. Carmelo is one of the best scorers in the league and they may need him to go for 40 if they want to win this game". Or during the game when a guy is hot they say something like "We seen Carmelo do this before. Looks like its one of those nights for him". Something like that. That'll be cool.

I don't like 2k's gameplay. It's last gen that's covered with a lot of fluff to disguise it. I can go on what I don't like about 2k9 but this is a Live thread.

And we will have the "other stuff" too with Live, eventually. A lot of it probably will find its way in '10 too, we'll see. But the series is almost starting from scratch with the newer dev team, so that "other stuff" might come little by little as the game gets better and better.

Mike joined the team last year, working on prototypes for NBA LIVE 10.

I joined at the very beginning of the cycle for NBA LIVE 10.

Yeah I'm concerned about that too. I don't want to see the same mess that's plaguing 2K come into this game since this WILL be my game of choice this year. I think there really needs to be failure and limits on what an animation is allowed to do regardless of ratings and that should supercede ratings. I just watch someone do a standing dunk with their back turned in an online game in 2K with Igoudala. If you looked at the play it would make you shake your head in disbelief because even if he wasn't guarded theirs no way he could do that. Animations need some kind of cap where no matter what the ratings come up with there's a hard cap that supercedes it and says, DANGER WILL ROBINSON: THAT DOES NOT COMPUTE and kicks over to a failure animation. He should have attempted it and came up short clanking the ball on the rim or, in the case of the play I saw, just come up miserably short.

I would love it if players got rim checked for trying to dunk it wrecklessly LOL. I don't think that's ever been implemented in a game before.

Yea and you would get called for a tech for holding on the rim.
