Y isn't box out. You just have to position yourself and time your jump(Y button) to go for the rebound.

Yes it is the box out button... You hold it down without letting it go to box out..

When you're ready to jump for the rebound let the button go.

Y ABSOLUTELY is the box out button...when the ball leaves the shooters hands you need to hit Y after you manually position your player to box out his check

I had no idea! Is this in the manual? Those manuals are worthless. If they could just fix the simmed stats.

I just tried this twice during free throws, and my player jumped instead of boxing out. And yes, I held it down.

Yea Beluba explained the box out mechanic in a thread I read here somewhere that's how it works.
