Re: One last push...help me understand some things about the game...

Here's what I learned specifically about the game after much gameplay (I love this game by the way):

    1) Try Baseline high cam b/c the right stick is NOT camera sensitive. When you try from this angle and press back on the right stick, the player will step back etc.

    2) Run your offense with your quick plays to go to a player that you want to score

    3) On iso plays, if you have a quicker player against slower defender
    a) back up to the three point line
    b) take note of which hand your ball handler is dribbling (Ex. right hand)
    c) right stick in opposite direction (Ex. quick crossover to left hand)
    d) if you blow by (does not work all the time) press the turbo button and this
    the most important part:
    1) YOU MUST LEFT STICK AND PRESS THE SHOOT BUTTON IN THE
OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF WHERE THE HELP "D" IS COMING FROM (This is
    what EA calls layup solutions)
    2) The player will then go into an animation for a hop step or euro step for
an easy bucket, foul, miss, or block (Da_Czar spoke on this and as you
play you'll begin to notice that you won't see the same contact
collisions everyone is saying they see all the time)
    e) if you can't get around him take a step back jumper or one of those
momentum jumpers to get yourself separation. Also you might want to set
a pick to get some separation from your defender.
    4) YOU MUST TAKE GOOD SHOTS!!! You can go to the hole all game but the
defense will adjust and pack in the ;ane so you must vary your offense.
When the jumpshot is not going down go to the hole and vice versa. TAKE
    GOOD SHOTS!!!!

When you do these things the game will open up for you tremendously. These "layup solutions" and the simple crossover to the non ball hand have changed this game for me and put it on another level. You can also pass out of the potential layup if help "D" comes over to get your man a easy shot on the blow by.

Any other questions.... feel free to ask

    Thanks,

YOUR "FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD" NBA LIVE FAN

P.S. I am playing all-star with default sliders and "playing very well I might add"....lol

Re: One last push...help me understand some things about the game...

Today is the day that it started coming together for me. I switched down to PRO and am using L4Ds excellent slider set with my own tweaks.

      1. I'll get the obvious out of the way. KNOW YOUR TEAM. Does your PG prefer to go L or R? Is he a spot up or cutter. This is A MUST.

(ex.)I was having major problems with Mo Williams in my Cavs franchise until I figured out that he loves to go left and pull up for the J. He just dropped 31 on the Knicks in my franchise.

      2. Check out the DNA of the opposing team and assign LOOSE, TIGHT, or NORMAL guarding depending on the match ups. As someone said, change these during the game. The CPU will adapt.

(ex.) I was getting killed by the Bulls driving all game against me in a franchise game. They pushed out to an 11 point lead in the second half. I then moved ALL guard levels to loose. The three balls started flying for the Bulls and I was able to comeback and win the game.

      3. Look at the playbooks(not just the Quick plays). Run the plays to exploit match ups and to make sure that your players are finding their spots. Also USE ICON PASSING WHEN RUNNING PLAYS. The passing logic as to where the ball ends up is terrible in this game and the ball often goes to the wrong man.

(ex.)Mo at the top of the key feeding Bron on the off ball screen is a great play. LeBron gets the ball to the right or left of the foul line and draino.

      4. When driving to the basket press the X earlier than you think you should...per Da_Czar.

      5. Use your timeouts during CPU rallies and change SOMETHING.

      6. Playing Off Ball D helps me stop drives to the hole. Especially when the opponent has a high DNA for Cuts.

      Good Luck man.

24...Don't trade it in... you just know you're going to want to try it out when the patch comes out anyway

Re: One last push...help me understand some things about the game...

Hey fellas I too am coming around to my rebirth in this game. My second learning, like you guys, feeling like there are some things you are just not doing right. I am loving the game but it just felt like I was not getting everything out of it. I started playing games to learn and found out how to use the PGs better, how to get by people without always using a pick, how TO use the pick more effectively, how to use the off ball controls and more. I think what was said earlier is correct about REALLY having to erase 2K mentality away COMPLETELY in order to really get into this game. Watching videos would not have helped me because my foundation was weak. Now I have a pretty strong foundation I think the vids will help. You can watch the vids and know what to do but your hands will always do what they know to do until you train them otherwise.

Another thing you should do 24 is to turn up the speed to 100 and just practice breaking guys off the dribble.

I know the speed thing sounds crazy but at this setting you get to see more of the subtlties in the animations. When you start to size up or what ever pay attention to the defenders feet.

Don't look at your player because he doesn't matter you know what your doing because your controlling him. If you seen the defender shift his feet in one direction then quickly cross in the other.

Same thing goes for layups in traffic look at the help players feet. And use that as I guide if you see that his momentum will probably carry him in one direction finish on the other side.

This sounds complex but once you start doing it, it becomes second nature. You really want to use the defenders momentum against him.

Once I figured this out I started to get more layups up in traffic and started blowing by players all the time with quick guys like CP3 and Rose.

I don't seem to have any problems blowing by guys. I adjusted a few sliders, and I am getting a much more realistic game in the paint. To me this game is absolutely fantastic.

I'm good at getting past guys when I get them to commit one way and then cross the other. However is there any animation for just blowing by a guy with your first step? Like how ultra quick guys such as TP or Devin Harris can? So far I haven't been able to do that...

There are some great tips in this thread. I haven't been able to play for a few days, but I'm dying to get back to it after reading this. I love how important it is to play good, strategic, basketball.

Those are some good tips, Riz. I'm gonna give those a go later tonite.

One question, to all. How do you set the defense into loose, tight, normal? I must've missed something there about how this is set.

Re: One last push...help me understand some things about the game...

I had a tough time when I first got the game and didn't really care for it. Then I started focusing more on executing based on my players DNA and mismatches. I think this game does a great job with being able to exploit mismatches in size and speed. When I play a team that has a small lineup I attack the paint agressively with pick & rolls and post up game. If I have a slower player guarding one of my more athletic gaurds I run a lot of isolations and screens to take advantage of the match up. This game does a great job of making you play to your strengths and more importantly exploiting your opponents weakness.

Really enjoying this thread guys. Thanks for the tips. It'd be great if this thread turned into a thread of tips and insights into improved game play.

I've had this game for about a week and I've been getting beat regularly at All-Star level. I prefer to not mess with the sliders until the patch is out so I've been committed to playing at that level with default sliders.

The best and easiest advice I've read so far is simply to lay off the turbo. I think most fans of sports games just smash the turbo button all game long. I know I did. But reserving the turbo for spot situations has really changed the game for me on offense.

Finally got a quality W last night vs. the Blazers (I'm always the Clippers) just by laying off the turbo and focusing on taking quality shots.

                        Keep the tips coming guys.

So far ive been blown out by the lakers with the grizzlies, won by 8 vs the rockets with utah, had a 1 point win over the nuggets with celtics, beat the mavs by 7 with the lakers then got blown out by detroit with golden state.

I also love the fastbreaks in pro.

This sums up my experience. The game has really opened up for me on pro (with tweaked sliders). This is one fantastic game.

                            BINGO. I got it.

Lives driving game = Maddens running game

Pressing turbo at the wrong time makes the CPU do the craziest things lol

I got to admit I was sceptical...but the fastbreak game does seem better on PRO.

Weird. I hardly see the CPU fastbreak at all on higher levels.

                              Nice work L4D

It's weird though as Beluba and Marcus specifically said pre launch that PRO was for "arcade players", "All star for SIM players"...

Yet pro seems to be much better?

I guess they were talking out of the box...whereas we are talking about LD4's sliders making pro very good.
