Ariza takes 3 seconds to make at all.

Re: Wide open shots miss more than contested shots

Just played one quarter of Knicks vs Bulls using real late releases for all my players, hit 5-11 from deep and even got the 3-pt highlight package, hadn't seen that in a while.

Even Ray Allen takes longer to release in order to make shots consistently. Something is definitely off.

I just think the quick/late emphasis could be a bit overdone. Here are the Warriors releases:

Biedrins - who knows? mostly dunks and putbacks under the rim
Randolph - Quick release, he flicks it
Jackson - Late release with a hitch
            Curry - Normal release
            Ellis - Normal release

            Morrow - Normal release
            Maggette - Normal release
            Wright - Slightly late release
Acie Law - Late release with a hitch
Turiaf - who knows, mostly putbacks and dunks
Azubuike - don't know, never use him
Mikki Moore - same as above
Everyone else on the roster - rarely used

Re: Wide open shots miss more than contested shots

I'm glad others are seeing it. Maybe it will help them.

To me, early or late release was never what I looked for, it was that hitch. Even guys that have a faster animation for their jumpshot, my goal is to always get that hitch to play out. To me, that's the indication that I've released the shot at the "peak" point. I do understand why others have a gripe though, because visually it is not the top of their jump.

Just something I caught that works well for me. Hopefully it well help others out as well.

It seems like a simple fix (IMHO) for next year - make that hitch occur at the highest point of their jump.

But as I've learned, simple to me is not always simple to a dev. in terms of implementing it.

You must be right with the hitch being the key. It's funny because it's so unnatural compared to how you shoot IRL that a user's natural reaction is to avoid that kind of hitch in the game. But apparently we must embrace it. It didn't help me either that I was playing a lot of CH2K8 recently as well, I'm sure that's what screwed everything up for me.

I think hitch is the right wording for it.

The problem is, depending on your momentum and if its a leaner/fadeaway or hook shots. Its almost impossible to consistently get your "hitch" on..

                  It's very frustrating.

Good looking Pared. Now that he said this, I did a little testing league-wide, and it seems 99% of players all have at least a slight hitch in their animation, and I have had success by just releasing just as it "hitches," so to speak. Some players' hitch is more pronounced and easier to catch than others, for example Melo's hitch, and ESPECIALLY Billups' hitch, is really easy to spot and release during it. While some players like Lebron & D. Rose have a lesser, but still noticeable, hitch in their animation.

Also, for some players like David West, and Peja, as well as Granger, they have less of a hitch, but there's a point in their animation where they're almost suspended at the top of the jump, form fully intact, and that have this "frozen moment" for but a slight instant. If you can release right at that moment for these guys, boy is it $$. I LOVE shooting with West in this game. Top of the key, got his release down, and he alone can at times open up my whole offense for everyone else just off the P & R.

I have seen the Hitch also. However I don't know using the celtics I seem to be able to release at the tops of the jump and shots go in. I believe this is pre hitch stage.

It was explained to me that releases are very important this year and some guys are super early and some guys like wade are super late and the range is "supposed" to include everything in between.

This would mean that not everyone's perfect shot release would be when its at the top of their jump (picture perfect release)

Certainly go with what works but I seem to shoot well with players once I find their best release point for them. Now to be honest I play with one team at a time and really get into practice etc etc. So I just may not have played enough with the guys you guys are describing.

I do agree it should be consistent. My only issue is so far I haven't seen it not be for me. Is there a good team to try this out with ?

Nice post. I don't think the 'hitch' is always the perfect release point so to speak. It's just there. I also release at the tops of some jumps and it's the perfect release for guys like Steph Curry, Anthony Morrow, Monta Ellis, etc etc. Some other guys like Captain Jack and Acie Law, those guys should be released post-hitch. So I don't really think that the hitch is the perfect spot, I lean towards what you're saying about the full range and having to find the perfect release for each player. It also really , really helps to stick with one team and learn their releases perfectly. After awhile it's like 2nd nature

I've been doing more controlled experiments. Repeating things..

It turns out that there's a point of catch and shoot that's very sensitive. If you shoot immediately as you catch the ball you will have a different hitch release point than if you catch and plant your feet first then shoot.

Also, the release points of leaners and hop steps etc.. change depending on your momentum.

It seems that the locomotion system is screwing up the signature shots because we can't tell unless we're standing still and planted what the perfect release is.

I have not been able to even in practice consistently hit shots from one spot.

Hey...Sorry, I think I jumped the gun a bit by calling Live's shot success scripted.

After playing a bit more, I have changed my mind. I don't think the game is scripted, but I still do think there are too many missed open shots. I think this may be due the game being too sensitive to the shot release timing. I think the game should just be more forgiving with the shot release timing so that even if you release a bit too late or too early, you will still make your open shot. Maybe allow more room for error with the shot releases.

Or, if you are a good shooter and you are wide open, maybe give him a slight boost in shooting percentage so that you will see fewer missed open shots.

There are also still too many contested shots going in. I think you just need to make some adjustments so that it is more unlikely to make a contested shot. This way, when you properly contest a shot, you really feel like your defense is impacting the shot.
