Big problem - Live's CPU does not recognize open teammates
This is a problem I have noticed when playing against the CPU. The CPU does not pass to open teammates. It seems with Live, the players are so concerned with running plays (which should be a good thing) or jacking up contested jumpers that they ignore a teammate if he is wide open. I understand that you want the CPU to run plays, but if a teammate is standing wide open under the hoop or at the 3 pt line, the CPU should instantly recognize it and pass to him. Often I see the CPU choose to shoot a contested jumper instead of passing to a wide open teammate for a better shot. What is even more frustrating is that the contested jumper usually goes in. It's like the game is rewarding the CPU for bad strategy and bad awareness. Passing to open players should be priority one for the CPU AI.Last edited by blues rocker; 11-02-2009, 10:11 AM.Tags: None -
Re: Big problem - Live's CPU does not recognize open teammates
This was true pre patch....havent played much post so I cant comment...but its definitely a problem.... If you take your sg off his man and go all the way across court, the CPU wont pay the open man attention thr majority of the time...good shooter or not. -
Re: Big problem - Live's CPU does not recognize open teammates
One of the many reasons on my growing list as to why I can't really play this game anymore unless it's human vs human.
Against the CPU the game is so bland in general. Walk the ball up, set up a play, execute. There's no spontaneity to the CPU's attack, I mentioned it before but it's basically like the CPU is running 5-on-Zero in practice. No real reads of the D. Fastbreaks are there but not nearly as frequent as they should be. After playing pretty much only as the Knicks since I bought the game I decided to finally play against the Knicks to see what the CPU did with them - it was ugly. Slow pace, basically the same as every other team. David Lee posting up a lot (huh?) and not that many 3's being shot.
If you play Live human vs human with two sim players I give the game play an 8/10, the rebounds, blocks and lack of fouls in the paint (which I need to check for sure post-patch) are a universal problem but outside of that I absolutely love this game hum vs hum. But my disdain is about equal for CPU vs HUM.
Not sure if it's worth keeping for online-only, especially since I'll be getting NCAA '10."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Re: Big problem - Live's CPU does not recognize open teammates
Yeah, you can totally leave your man on defense and run to the other end of the floor, and the CPU will fail to realize it. Instead the CPU will just ignore the open teammate and take a stupid contested jumper. It seems like in Live the AI is not "dynamic." It seems like when the CPU gets the ball, it has a predetermined mission about what it's going to do, and it refuses to break from that mission no matter what it actually happening on the floor. It will never break from the play or "mission" to pass to an open man. To be honest, both NBA games this year have issues that make them not worth playing. Live is the better overall game, but there are plenty of issues with Live that make me want to quit playing.Comment

Re: Big problem - Live's CPU does not recognize open teammates
I know what you're saying, but it's not nearly as bad as you make it out to be. There's been many times I've drifted away from the guy I was covering, and when I realized it and tried to get back - too late!
Also, if you're guarding the PG, and make a steal attempt and get too far, the PG will often take it straight to the hole.
But could it be better? Yeah, definitely.Comment

Re: Big problem - Live's CPU does not recognize open teammates
I have to disagree with the topic. If that were the case, it wouldn't be such a big deal when the matchup bug happens -- (the matchup bug being where two of your players try to guard the same guy regardless of what the matchup settings are. You have to manually take control of the defender who is leaving his man every possession for the rest of the game to fix it. Haven't seen it since the patch)
When the matchup bug happened, the CPU picked up on the open guy every time while you asked why that guy was always so open.
From reading the other posts, I know what you mean, maybe if you leave someone open in the middle of a play the CPU won't take the shot with the other guy but thats not a cut & dry thing as it could be due to ratings/tendencies or whatever.
I guess my thing is does it feel right while i'm playing, and for me it does. I haven't had many situations where I left someone and the CPU was too preoccupied with their set and didn't make me pay.Last edited by Tha_Kid; 11-01-2009, 10:10 PM.Comment

Re: Big problem - Live's CPU does not recognize open teammates
Definitely something that is becoming more and more frustrating the more I play this game. Love the game, but this to me is pretty glaring.
I have to co-sign the OP, it def feels like there's a "mission" the CPU has on each possession, and it won't deviate from it regardless of what the user is doing. In my Dynasty, I've been crowding the stars, guys like Granger, Melo, Lebron, etc, with a strategy of making the lesser players beat me. Thing is, I can leave Mo Will completely open in the left corner, but the CPU won't care if the "mission" is to hit Gibson coming off a screen on the right side, heavily contested and in general traffic. 9 of 10 times, Gibson will shoot the contest J, I'll even block it sometimes, but Mo will be in the corner WIDE the F OPEN!
What PO's me even more, is that these ill-advised contested jumpers go in more often than not (especially on SS level which I play on for the extra collisions primarily) and leave you shaking your head. Because 1) scrubs don't swish contested J's on the regular 2) Mo Will was open, why not pass it to him? 3) Your AI teammates seem to just LOVE to stand by and watch guys shoot.
REALLY hoping the 2nd patch can fix this if it's coming.NOW PLAYING:

Re: Big problem - Live's CPU does not recognize open teammates
Like I said, I haven't seen what he is describing where you can egregiously leave your man (like the old matchup bug or the bug where a player would run to the other end of the court) and the CPU ignores that they're playing 4 on 5. I have on the other hand seen the CPU take advantage of it, again due to those pre-patch bugs. I just finished playing the game before I posted, plus this isn't something you need to go test, its pretty obvious whether its there or not in the midst of playing.Last edited by Tha_Kid; 11-01-2009, 10:20 PM.Comment

Some people thought i was i just bashing the game........
I wasn't bashing the game i just caught on to a lot of these flaws earlier then most people were able to see at that time.
I also love it human vs human style but i'm so damn hands on with Live it's killing me right now to see all these flaws still exist for single player mode. I'm hoping to finding some solutions to these problems but it's gonna take sometime and the edits won't solve all problems but hopefully it minimizes them somewhat.NCAA FOOTBALL 14 ALUMNI LEGENDS CPU vs CPU DYNASTY THREAD

Re: Big problem - Live's CPU does not recognize open teammates
I was saying the "robot-style play execution" early on since it was the exact same way in NCAA 09 last year. But yeah, I've been playing Live for years so you noticed a lot of nagging issues much earlier than us 2Kers.

Re: Big problem - Live's CPU does not recognize open teammates
Yeah, we just happened to use the same term lol...but check it out next time you play. I guess you wouldnt really notice it just playing...I stumbled upon it b/c the cpu was getting to much penetration, so i used my sf to play the middle of the floor. Then i realized "hey, theres not really a risk in doing this, b/c the cpu isnt paying hin any attention to the guy im defending" It doesnt happen all the time, but enough to make you wonder about the AI..Comment

I left a wing a shooter to defend the PG, and the PG, did indeed pass to him for uncontested shots.Comment
