How did this issue make it into the final game? I mean this kind of thing should be "video games 101." - you press a button and the character does something - that's something they perfected way back on Atari, yet it's 2009 and I can't make my player jump when I press the block button. WTF!!!!
The block button is worthless - so unresponsive.

The block button is worthless - so unresponsive.
After playing the game for a while now, I think one of the worst parts of the game is the crappy block button. I'm not even exaggerating here - almost half of the time I press the block button, my player just stands there and does nothing. Sometimes I will tap the button 3-4 times and my player will still just stand there like an idiot. This is really frustrating when you are standing right in front of a shooter and you press the block button to contest and your player doesn't jump...then the shooter drains the shot because your player didn't jump when you pressed the block button. B.S.

I'll break it down for you so you don't feel the need to flame the game based on user error or lack of understanding.
Fist things first, blocks aren't considered contested shots. to get a hand in the opponents face "to contest the shot" you tap the block button. You will notice the animation is that of a true to life contested shot. You'll also notice if you have a gap between you and the offensive player and you contest the shot by tapping he will close the gap.
This is the important part I had to learn when i was having the same issue with the game. Contested shots result in far more missed shots for the opponent than assuming every every shot you swat at will be blocked or contested, this is not contesting the shot. The difference in the two is one will have you out of position while the other will allow you to recover and stay on your man. Tap to contest, hold to block. once you figure out when to use these in the right situation you'll be less frustrated with the game.
Hope this helps a little.Comment

Re: The block button is worthless - so unresponsive.
I was having a bit of frustration with the block button too, but ^^^ your post sheds some light on the issue thanks I'll try it out tonight......however the STEAL button is a hit and miss with me...I don't know but to me in some instances it seems like the dribbling responsiveness is okay when it comes to controls but every thing else..( passing, rebounding, block, steals, picks, doubleteams....) just seems to have a certain amount of delay on the responsiveness to the button presses...it could just be me...but whatever the problem is ......the overall player movement mechanics of this years game feel unfinished.
Now having said that..I am beginning to notice that someone (devs) is tweaking the game...because it is starting to flow better and I am even starting to see new movements and the collision has gotten better especially when going up for blocks..I don't feel sucked in to the animation...(it breaks right away..) I just wish when I command my player to do something...it would be done without this feeling of delay. (honestly flow of the game is great, the crowd is awesome in this game too but controls are a pain at times)JambroComment

This is simple really, you aren't understanding how this part of the game works.

Blocks are more for swatting layups and shots around the rim.
Tapping Y gives you that Shane Battier close out animation.Comment

I think DNA and ratings also have something to do with it also. Seems like some dudes give no effort at D while others respond quickly. Check your guys and matchups and see if you see a pattern.Comment

Re: The block button is worthless - so unresponsive.
Im sorry but i have to disagree. Sometimes when you press the block button and even hold it down nothing happens. The forcefield could be a problem and be causing this. Blocking and alot of other things like rebounds have to be re written in this game. Sometimes when i go or a block my players jumps in the opposite direction. WTF??
I think rebounding is a solid foundation this year, especially post patch #2, it's more balanced. It took me a while to get the grasp of it but when you do rebounding actually functions as it should.... you must box out above all. Gone are the typical video game type rebounding where it's about the hurry up and jump. Now it's about position and a solid box out. A lot of people think the person they control HAS to get the board, but in a lot of cases if you help on the box out a teammate will snatch the board up.Comment

Re: The block button is worthless - so unresponsive.
I'm not saying the game is perfect by any means. What i'm saying is I've found a lot of people misunderstanding when you go for a block and when you contest a shot. I haven't found the buttons to be unresponsive in my case when it come to the two. I've seen some odd animations, yes but the is to be expected in any video game.

Good point.. most people think they need to hurry and jump, not playing fundamentals of basketball. People must not care if their teammates get boards, maybe they want to pad their superstar stats.Comment

I think it should work like this - if you just press the button, you will get a "light contest" where you just jump slightly and put your hand up. If you hold down turbo and press jump, then your player will do an "aggressive contest" where he jumps to contest the shot. I believe this is similar to how 2k's blocking works.Comment

Re: The block button is worthless - so unresponsive.
Wrong w/ the idea that the block button doesn't work. You should be 'contesting' jump shots and bodying people inside anyway. I only block people to let them know what's up.
I also disagree w/ the idea that contesting makes people miss (unless they mis-release) it might for 'average' players, but for glitch players like Bibby and Mo you have to block them or they will drain it. Even with Andre Iggy I can hit over contests all day. I've put 50 on people multiple times just shooting jumpers from around the FT line area.

Re: The block button is worthless - so unresponsive.
This is obviously NOT true, at least for anyone who's actually played the game. I play on all-star 12min qrts. So yes Live does allow for proper box outs. What live does do well is for once forces you to play sim style basketball. A lot of the complaining i'm sure comes from frustration and those who THOUGHT they had been playing sim style basketball. So what you end up with is people complaining and making false statements about the game.

Re: The block button is worthless - so unresponsive.
Im sorry but Live is NOT sim! 09 was sim but not Live 10. Do you have a ps3 so I can show you how sim your game is! lol. Blocking is completely broken! Like smak said....I can score 50 points with computer contesting shots all day! And im not being Kobe! Rebounding is broken also and i will show you! Its funny people take shots at you when you disagree with them. I've never played the game huh? Play on superstar hun! All star doesn't even give me a challenge.
No one was taking shots at anyone until you unsuccessfully attempted to join the conversation. I suggest you go back and reread what i've posted.Comment
