Depends on what model XBOX and what shape disc drive tray you have.

All launch XBOX consoles have Thompson drives, which are easily identified by the shape of the hole in the disc tray, sort of like a "U" shape. These consoles were made in Hungary, Europe.

More recent XBOX consoles (mostly made in China) will have one of the following drives:

    1. A slightly improved version fo the Thompson drive (U shape)
    2. Philips drive (U shape with a circular shape cut out in the centre of the tray)
    3. Samsung drive which also happens to be able to read burnt music CDs, so you can rip tracks to your HD (U shape with a few small circular shapes cut out around the centre of the tray)

If you have an Xbox with a Samsung drive, then consider yourself lucky as this the best and most reliable drive followed by the Philips. Unfortunately mine has the Thompson!

    Hope my descriptions make sense!

Thanks. I think I have a samsung drive. Does it read rw cd's or regular burned cd's? I was able to get a regular burned cd on there twice but I haven't had any luck with them afterwards. I can use the cd rw's though. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Re: PS2 version VS XBOX version

Its nice that you are one of the apparently VERY few people that have had no slowdown, but when someone comes to the board to ask which version, its probably not a good idea to let one person who has not had the problem sway the decision making for the thread starter.

Once again, it has nothing to do with which version of the Xbox he has (its not the dvd accessing thats causing slowdown, its the rendering) so I have no idea why you keep bringing that up in an attempt to try and tell me I know nothing about Xboxes.

Maybe you should take your own advice and not respond if you dont have anything constructive to say. You are one of the VERY few people to say you have no problems with it, and it is VERY contructive for the thread starter to know that people without the slowdown are very much in the minority and he should expect slowdown regardless of which version he decides on.

You're welcome. Depends on the brand and quality of the CD, but yes you will have more luck with CD-RWs. There is a brand of CD-RW that even works on the original Thompson drives!

How do you figure out what drive your xbox has?

                            <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

Depends on what model XBOX and what shape disc tray drive you have.

All launch XBOX consoles have Thompson drives, which are easily identified by the shape of the hole in the disc tray, sort of like a a U shape. These consoles were made in Hungary Europe.

More recent XBOX consoles (mostly made in China) will have one of the following drives:

                            1. A slightly improved version fo the Thompson drive (U shape)
                            2. Philips drive (U shape with a circular shape cut out in the centre of the tray)
                            3. Samsung drive which also happens to be able to read copied music CDs, so you can rip tracks to your HD (U shape with a few small circular shapes cut out around the centre of the tray)

You're welcome. Depends on the brand and quality of the CD, but yes you will have more luck with CD-RWs. There is a brand of CD-RW that even works on the original Thompson drives!

I have Samsung also. And I believe it's the game, that has problems.
