Am I doing something wrong?

Sorry just rented this game.

Why does the offensive player always turn away from the basket when guarded tightly? When I try to dribble around, they stay in that back to the basket position.

Is there something I can do to change this?

bcuz if you just dribbled up and faced him you will be getting the ball taken. to prevent it, take your thumb off the left analog stick and freestyle while standing still, then when you arre ready to go past him, go back to the L analog stick and go past him.

........maybe Live should have on the box "Some basketball IQ required!"

everyone wants to make the game a sim but basketball is a game and Live is a game, to be good at both PRACTICE is required!!!!! Just like you cant go from couch potato to T-Mac is the same as you cant go from Double Dribble to Superstar mode on Live 2004.

Are you insecure about something? I haven't been on this Live board before so don't know how much explaining you've had to do...But obviously from your tone, a lot of people have asked this before- meaning that its a fairly normal question.

Yes, your logic about being stripped makes sense, but in any case, the defensive player never gets that close in the NBA. The reason being that it would give the offensive player an extreme advantage. All the player would have to do is take the ball to the defender's side and would 1) draw the foul or 2) blow right past him, as the defender doesn't have an "space" to work.

Is this what you meant by basketball IQ?

I've watched a lot of games this year with that in mind, and have seen the ball handler face the basket (guarded or not) 85% of the time. This is just one of the many things Live needs to adjust come next season.

Yeah I hate this about the game. Especially when you try to go past your defender but your stuck in this backing down animation.

well, the triple threat position in freestyle really helps cause it helps you swing the ball from one side and jab and stuff, so when you are jabbing in the right direction, GO. it works for me 90% of the time
