    Random thoughts on Live 2005

First off, I am a huge basketball fan, and have been playing Live since '95 so I feel my opinions might hold some weight here. I have been pretty disappointed with most of the basketball games on the next-gen systems period. Live has taken some steps in the past two years, as has ESPN/2K, but I think EA is going about progressing the series in the wrong way.

Freestyle control, pure genius, I have some gripes with a few moves, mostly the fact that almost everybody in the game has a vicious handle. With EA putting out the NBA Street series, I think they should start focusing on making Live more simulation, and life-like. Without turning this into a wishlist, Most importantly like to see an improvement in the passing game, seems like they are focusing more on the rebounding this year, last year wasn't bad at all.

Just got the new Game Informer and it hypes being able to choose what dunk you can do mid-air. This is the kinda stuff im talking about, Im all for giving the user more control, but the basic gameplay needs to be tight everywhere else before you start throwing in gimmicks. Player specific moves, big men should play like big men, not everyone should be able to take their man off the dribble effectively, separate ratings for mid range and 3pt shots, some momentum would be nice, (how often do you get doubled, pass out of it, and the doubler is able to recover in time to steal, or get in front of the offensive player), speaking of doubling, I think they should scrap that animation that put in last year, that forces you to pickup your dribble and pass. Seems like the people working on the game should actually sit down and watch some games, instead of going off what they think they know of basketball, and what they can market. The game doesn't seem like the real thing unlike most of EA's other franchises!

Supposedly, EA claims that one of the main things they worked on was making a better mid range game.

Rebounding was terrible last year. There was virtually no offensive rebounding and the AI will never attack the glass.

Also double teams need to be toned down. When I feed the ball to Morris Peterson in the post he shouldn't be getting double-teamed everyteam.

          Also no mid-range game.

But even with that said it's a very fun game and it's great for 2 player action.

Considering how the NBA markets itself, it's not a surprise that games are going off in questionable directions. There just isn't a lot of evidence that people want a game that plays a realistic brand of basketball. If they did, Inside Drive would have been a hit- no basketball game ever made captures the nature of off the ball player movement or mid range shots as well. But the game didn't sell, and it got panned by the gaming media. Meanwhile, the dreadful ESPN NBA got great scores because it had 24/7, whatever the hell that was (I owned the game for two months and never touched the feature).

The NBA markets itself as flash, the media expects flash (aka graphics), and gamers insist upon it.

I think this is not a big problem, since they can have several game modes, like Arcade and Simulation. They can make the Arcade mode like NBA LIVE 2003 so players who prefer flash games can love it, they can tweak the gameplay to be realistic in Simulation Mode, which would please hardcore gamers.

                            I agree

they need to make arcade with all the flash!!i think they have got that right
but they gotta concentrate on building Sim mode up, lets face it thats what we are all asking for!!

the two different modes should be defined!!!
