So releasing Live 20 or 21 would not change anything. They need 2K to stumble, or it turns out, hire some guys from 2K that might get the game a more fair look. Still not sure it is enough, but this makes sense from a PR standpoint as much as it does from a talent acquisition standpoint.
But EA has been holding back releasing a new Live for the same reason 2K won't do a hockey game. A good game still gets buried like it's a complete failure because currently, gamers choose one sports game, and then tear the other one apart.
I think the biggest problem is that gamers have called for competition for so long that they forgot that they were not the ones competing. So now guys like a game, and the have to fight for it by tearing t he other one down.
You saw it as the beginning of the 360 generation with Madden and NFL2K. It's exactly why EA bought out the exclusivity. It was worth spending the money than ending up like NHL2K, MLB2K and NBA Live have ended up. All good games, but nowhere near profitable in an environment that no longer celebrates competition, but only domination.Comment

Yea, I liked 18 and 19 both pretty decent. They weren't great games but worth getting after a price drop. I hope they can come back on some level in the future. I also loved the Street series back in the day. I don't know, I haven't liked a 2k since 2k17 so as a basketball gamer things aren't too good nowadays. I've mostly been playing older titles, Live 19, 2k17, and even NBA Live 2004, which is my all time favorite.
I pop in Live 19 sometimes, but I just play other stuff now.Comment

Re: FY 21 report doesn't have NBA LIVE 21 on it
My thought was that EA realized that they needed to change the narrative if they were ever going to get Live back toing competitive in the marketplace. I don't think there was a level of greatness NBA Live could achieve that would draw customers, and not get slammed in social media. It's the nature of sports gaming right now.

Cost of production & license is another factor, along with being an annualized sports title. Costs are constantly rising to where it's too much for the average company to jump in. Especially when it will seem like a uphill battle when faced against a top AAA game. It will take a few years just to get to a decent level and another few years to get to the current level of competition. By then, competition is already 5 steps ahead. Unless they feel they can profit immediately, they don't feel it is worth it.
I want competition. But I don't want Live to treat it as a "How do we beat 2k" approach vs a "How do we make the best game". It's like when you see NBA teams build teams with the idea of beating one team. Like how 76ers were constructed in a way to matchup with the Bucks. When you take that approach, you're always going to be a couple steps behind. Live needs it own identity and stick to it.Comment
