Well, the player is basically the point guard since your the one that has to see the floor and run the team. IMO of course.

One thing that I think desperately needs to be implemented for this to even matter is true differentiation of play styles in NBA games. PGs matter more in some systems than in others. The Lakers for example don't need a great passing PG because the triangle facilitates its own offense. The Suns offense on the other hand dies without Nash. All PGs are products of the system, some systems are PG friendly(D'Antoni) and others don't even really need one.

On the standpoint of gameplay, awareness has to be made to create options. It should represent a Bball IQ. Low Awa should actually take away the ability to make certain passes or should mistime them because you didn't see them coming. On the other hand High Awa should give something akin to the effect of the broken passing in 2k9, only with more propensity for screw ups.

The passing ratings(which is highly overrated for nearly every player in NBA games) should determine the crispness of passing, the variety of passes, the arc of lobs and bounce passes and the ability to put passes in the right spot. That said we first need for the ball to not merely be a part of player animations. We have to be able to throw passes too low, too high, miss it off the fingertips ect rather than it being vacuumed to the player with the highest hands rating.

Finally the PG has to be able to run the offense. This means that play calling has to be more fluidly implemented into the gameplay. The PG is the coaches avatar on the court and good PGs can run the team autonomously. Without an in depth play calling/making system we'll never be able to replicate what a PG really does.

this is very interesting. I completely agree with you that ur PG doesnt matter. u have the cheesers using LeBron at PG and suffer no consiquences. when u just play and don't think about it ur PG is almost non existent. I tend to use my PG. In my league cp3 is averaging 14 points and 9 assists, but most ppl who want to run the fastbreak just outlet it to the SF
New York Yankees. New York Giants. New York Knick (FML].

I play pg for my high school, and im not a scorer or a flashy passer and extremely unathletic. But what i do cant be measured. I bring the ball up the court while a lot of kids would get it stolen or when they get by their man theyll automatically take a bad shot. What I do is bring the ball up, set up the offense, dont shoot too much, direct the offense, and dont make turnovers! Now if im forced too I can get by my man and if a man is left open I will find him. Also my pick and roll game is lethal. I only average around 6 points a game and around 8 assists. Yet I like to believe the fact that I usually only have 1 turnover a game, is my best stat and the most important.

For court vision maybe the open player should light up.
I will always, always be a Jets fan. But trust me it hurts.

Ya'll are gonna see how much PGs matter in the Team Up on 2k this year, lol.

The point guard is a position more defined by the brain of the player than any other position in basketball. If the whole team has the same brain(the user) how can you expect the PG to remain as important? When one person controls five players, the PG's role is now spread around, kind of like the real life Lakers.

You'll see a big difference when all five players are controlled by different people. Then you guys will see the need for a PG that knows who's hot, who has the matchup advantages and who needs the ball before they get bored and stop playing D. And you'll also see the big bonus of having a PG that knows how and when to hit a big shot, as well as the big drawback of a PG who takes too many shots, or spends too much time trying to drive and kick.

I'll agree with what one poster said about point guards in College Hoops 2K8 being more relevant. I think it's because they actually have the awareness system that you guys are talking about. A seasoned senior PG with a lot of experience and high awareness on College Hoops becomes a "coach on the floor" and gives the team a team unity boost - but only when he is on the floor.

Also, passing skills are more pronounced in college hoops. I was playing NBA 2K8 all weekend on Hall of Fame with only one slider adjustment (collision sensitivity maxed out). I was playing with the Nets and was easily averaging 30 assists per game with J. Kidd. I was also getting about 7 assists per game with M. Williams coming off the bench. While it was evident that I was able to make passes with J. Kidd that I couldn't make with M. Williams, it was still too easy to lead pass for an easy dunk or layup, hence my consistent 28+ assists games with J. Kidd.

I really hope that NBA 2K10 differentiates passing skill more between PGs. Awareness is hard to replicate in a video game since we are "the brains" of the players as someone else mentioned. I guess one way to solve this would be to delay passing commands for lower tier point guards to represent missed opportunities of finding the open man. I don't know if most fans would go for that (more arguing about lack of control), but at least it puts a premium on the top tier PGs in the league.
