I agree with 10 being the best bball game I've ever played, but it had its flaws. I quit playing for awhile because people refused to play the game and wanted to exploit the flaws. But I got over it...

Anyway, I can see why people are afraid when it comes to Elite. It's not just the huge change but there are some odd things about it. It's a big risk. I love the way players interact, but I don't want to see a bunch of crazy dunks. I think that's what made 10 so fun was that people couldn't dunk and wiggle around under the basket. Unfortunately, people figured out how to wiggle still, and could get to the line. Still, it was better than seeing guys just take off on people.

That seems to be back in Elite and that is a big thumbs down. Also I'm skeptical as to how the user controlled shooting is going to work. If they make it too user friendly all of us who play it for real and are good at it are going to be making every shot. At the very least, I hope they make it pretty hard to shoot on superstar.

But yeah, overall I am reserving my judgment until the demo comes out. I liked 09 and 10... so I owe them at least that.

I have not posted a ton in the Elite forum but I'll agree I do not have interest in buying their game anymore. I think you had the if->then statement a little backward though. In my case, it's not "no interest in purchasing from the start = comments on lack of visual appeal". Rather, it's more "lack of visual appeal (and more) = no interest in buying the game".

I linger in the Elite forums just in case I see something that changes my mind. I knew very well the first video clip (Boozer dunk madness) was likely not going to be how the final product looked. Therefore, I hung on just to see what the next release (and the next) had in store. Regarding the original posters' initial statement ("I don't see what everyone dislikes about Elite") I would at least be willing to mention a few of my opinionated hangups:

      1. Super Dunks - The Boozer Situation
      2. Super Jumps - regarding blocks and contact mid-block
      3. Contact Awkwardness - the infancy of RTP appears rough and weird
      4. Generic Dribbling Moves for All - No signature dribble packages to my knowledge
      5. Shots Appear Somewhat Jerky with Unnatural Relase
      6. Generic Commentary
      7. Euro-Step Appears Extremely Unnatural at Times
      8. Rebound Situations appear to yield unnatural reactions from players in midair (likely under the RTP umbrella)
      9. Big Men Potentially Shooting Squared Up Jump Shots from 3 feet
      10. Every non-banked made field goal appears to be a swish
      11. Dunks seem to lack power regarding ball slamming through net
      12. Rim Physics appear unnatural
      13. Game Appears generally disjointed from an animation standpoint

There's a real solid chance that many gamers are okay with all of those points. And I'll concede many of these points can be seen as nitpicking. But when it comes to choosing a game, that's what I'll do. The good news is that this is not an election. One of these games will not be eliminated if we don't convince everyone else to vote for them. I have preferred 2K in the past because I have liked what it has to offer and I have been more willing to deal with their faults instead of Live's. This year will be the same situation.

So, while my word surly isn't universal truth, there's at least some of the things I personally dislike about Elite this year.

2k11 got a lot better. I have been so sick of paint ball 2k9 and even 10 that I was really on the fence with Live/ELITE but 2k11 got better. In the demo its easier to score with Kobe shooting jumpers than it is slashing with Kobe. Thats a huge paradigm shift that pretty much placed NBA 2k11 with the big boys of sim sports.

For Elite to overcome that it was going to need knock your socks off physics like Backbreaker. It was going to need an AI upgrade, an upgrade in animations, and a real upgrade in controls. I got neither from the demo. It really is as simple as that.

Re: I don't see what everyone dislikes about Elite

i think alot of the nba elite hate stems from people wanting ea to fail as a whole...alot of it has to do with the madden heads who think the past 3 maddens have been the worst ever and they just as said before want ea to fail.

the nba elite demo was nice to me i loved that new mode, with the superstar in all and the gameplay was nice imo.....

the only problem i had with elite is the same one i have a had for years. alot of your consumers are grown people, people who on average get 4 hours of free time per day (if that) we don't have time to play 82 games plus a playoff why not reduce the season mode? why is that so hard? to me thats completely unaccecptable and it should be implemented in elite when it comes out

I dunno man... I've supported EA quite a bit, and have REALLY enjoy Madden and NCAA the past few years.

I didn't like Elite, because, well, compared to Live 10, they took HUGE steps back in graphics, gameplay, and authenticity.

The new control scheme brought me nothing that I couldn't do in Live, in fact, it took things AWAY, including step backs, and signature break-down dribbles. It also removed signature shots. The graphics, for whatever reason, don't look NEARLY as good as they did last year, and when you combine those aforementioned elements, you end up with a game that is significantly less that what was clearly a major step in the right direction in NBA Live 10.

Five years into a generation is NOT the time to start a three year plan that ultimately produces a lesser product from the outset.

I keep hearing Elite "defenders" say, "well, I think people just don't get the controls" or "I think this hate just stems from EA hate"... NO, that's NOT it. First, the controls are not at all complicated, they just plain aren't very good, and second, it's just a poor product, that even EA supporters like myself have to shake our heads at.

This game needs to wait until the the 2012 title is ready for release, and use this next year and a half to give us something worth $60.

Re: I don't see what everyone dislikes about Elite

Having grown up on EA Basketball games (Bulls vs Lakers, Team USA Basketball, Live '95 - 2002), I felt the series started regressing with NBA Live 2003. Up until that point, I would say that the series' focus was still on creating an authentic basketball experience. Once NBA Live 2003 was released, their focus started being more on fun and control and less on replicating the NBA and the science of 5 on 5 basketball.

I saw a glimmer of hope for the franchise when NBA Live '10 dropped. While I did not purchase it, I thought that maybe the series was beginning to return to its original focus that made me a Live fanboy during my younger years. But after playing the Elite demo, it was Live '03 all over again.

In my opinion, to take an officially licensed product based on a real life sports league and not try to replicate how that league is played and view on TV is a misuse of a license. This is the sports simulation genre. Players should have games that simulate the sport and the league it's trying to portray. I'll grant clemency to franchises such as NFL Blitz, NBA Jam, NBA Street, etc because their original focus has always been on being wacky and beyond realism.

The simulation genre is suppose to bring balance to that. If you want a pick up and play casual game, that's what the arcade franchises were for. But for simulations, leave that easy to control, easy to play stuff at home. Create a game that requires users to react and think like a real life professional athlete does every time he takes the court/field. That's why you go out and secure licenses right? So gamers can feel like they are Kobe Bryant/Lebron James/Carmelo Anthony/insert favorite player here. That's why I've favored the 2K franchise over the past decade because of the authenticity they try to replicate in their products (with the exception of the atrocious NBA 2K4 which I felt they only made because of how successful Live '03 was commercially).
