Cavs fans.....tell me about Jeff McInnis

There are rumors that the Nets may have agreed to a two year deal with McInnis. His stats looked pretty good last year, and I remember how well he played when he was on the Clips, but alot of Cavs fans seem to hate him. Is he really that bad of a person?

Regardless, I'd take him over Palacio who was rumored to come to NJ.

      High strung.

He's a frenetic, hyper, over-caffienated personality...which can be good for a team. Somebody who gets everybody pumped ala Mad Dog Madsen. Problem is...he only acts that way when he's feeling good about his own game. When his confidence is high, he's a solid, solid player. But, when his confidence is down, he's a selfish problem child. He sulks, he stops playing defense...overall his whole attitude changes. Also, he doesn't take criticism well.

Skill-wise he's a limited finisher (he relies heavily on the 8-foot floater, maybe too heavily) and he's got an inconsistent mid-range jumper. Basically, he's a streaky scorer. That said, he can usually scrape up 12-15 pts somewhat consistently, which is more than you can say for Daniels, Jaric and probably Jaskivicious...all highly sought-after FA PG's. His 3-pt range was pretty decent early last season, but suffered greatly after a January finger injury. Again, that killed his confidence, thus killing his positive energy. Hopefully for you guys, he's past that. He handles the ball well (killer spin-move), he can create space for others, and he works well with big guys. He likes to aggressively feed the post, so he should get Kristic a few easy buckets.

Defensively, he's HORRIBLE at defending the pick and roll. He's too smallish to fight through, and isn't quick enough to get over consistently. Then when the coach inevitably chews his arse for it...you got attitude problems.

If he's happy coming off the bench, and he gets enough minutes (in his mind), J-Mac is a fine player. Alot of guys get on him, but for the first 2/3 of the season, he was a top 12 performer (statistically)...not a bad guy to have coming off the bench and fillling in for injuries. You just have to hope his head stays on straight...which unfortunately he hasn't been able to do yet after several years in the league.

      Hope this helps.

        Thanks.

I trust your opinion over other people from the net. Alot of things you've said have been mentioned by other Cav fans, so I guess some of his negatives are true.

If he does sign, he obviously knows he will be the backup, and with guys like VC, Kidd, RJ and Reef on the team I doubt his whinning can shake up our chemistry.

3 of those 4 are pretty strong personalities that should be able to keep him in check.

            Thanks for the props.

With that many stars in the starting rotation, he should be happy as a 6th or 7th man. But if a guy like Planicic starts playing well and eating into J-Macs minutes...there will be fallout. Good luck.

I co-sign on Mcginnis with what HMC said. He's been that way since his Clippers days, but then he seemed ALOT more focused on himself than he is now.

Re: Cavs fans.....tell me about Jeff McInnis

July 29, 2005 -- <!--start bodytext-->The local team with the new coach got all the attention. But the local team with all the talent got even better yesterday.

The Nets, who already have added Shareef Abdur-Rahim, addressed two of their most obvious needs in one package when they reached agreement with Cavs' free agent point guard Jeff McInnis, according to his agent.

"The Nets really did a masterful job with this. They sought out Jeff with professional precision and [coach] Lawrence Frank played a big part," said McInnis' agent, Steve Kauffman, who noted McInnis received a two-year deal with the second year at play option.

"It almost came out of nowhere, but it is a great situation for Jeff."

McInnis, 31 in October, is a 6-4 talent who plays both guard spots. He can run a team and will be a very capable backup to Jason Kidd, but he also is considered a good shooter, despite career 43 percent shooting.

McInnis averaged 12.8 for Cleveland last year and is now the sixth legitimate double-figure scorer on the Nets' roster, joining Kidd, Vince Carter, Richard Jefferson, Abdur-Rahim and Nenad Krstic.

"That is going to be one exciting, entertaining, fun team," Kauffman said. <!--OAS Middle-->

McInnis, courted by several teams including Miami, will get $7 million total. That will take a decent chunk, about $3.4 million, of the Nets' $4.9 million mid-level exception this season, but they still figure they may have enough to land another swingman or a big body.

Considering that a high-profile player is likely to slip to minimum contract level when the luxury tax amnesty guillotine drops, the Nets still could land two players.
"All I can say is we're still trying to improve our team and are still having conversations," said Nets team president Rod Thorn.

The Nets had targeted Keyon Dooling, but the Miami free agent jilted them and signed for more money and a chance to start in Orlando. So they went after McInnis. Signings cannot officially begin until the current moratorium ends, perhaps next week.

McInnis, has played for five NBA teams and done a few CBA tours and was in the eye of a major Cavs storm last season. On March 20, he was benched by Paul Silas, who then wanted him waived. Management intervened, but Silas was fired the next day. It was not clear why Silas soured on him. The Nets have long been of the belief that theirs is a self-policing locker room and figure to have no worries about McInnis.

I like the signing makes us much more deeper and we finally have a good backup for Kidd who can hold down the forth when he heads to the bench, didn't see this coming. I'm sure Kidd will keep his attitude in check and get his head straight.

I like McInnis. I think he was more vital to the Cavs success than people realize. When he was injured in 03-04, the Cavs went into a slump and when he was benched this last year, the same thing happened. No doubt he has attitude problems, but he knows how to run a team.

                        Good signing.

Daniels, if given starters minutes, which McInnis had, could easily put up over 15 points per game. In three games, starting against the Spurs in the playoffs, Daniels averaged 19 points per game, and for the series he averaged 17.5. Expect similar numbers from him this season. As for McInnis...

He is very streaky. I had McInnis on my fantasy team the last two seasons, and I saw it all first hand. I remember last season, after the first two months or so, I think he was averaging around 16-17 points per game. But the best thing about his game, one of the main reasons I had him on my squad, was his high assist to turnover ratio.

New Jersey is a true contender, but also the most delicate team there is. The improvements come at a price and a risk. McInnis will start off as a huge asset, making you wonder why the last team got rid of him. Then, if he gets upset, he'll become a huge chemistry issue. Last season, he wore his jersey backward in practice because he was playing for the name that was on the back, not the front. As long as he keeps his attitude in check, I like the Nets to go far.
After more than eight years on here, I finally figured out how to edit my time zone!
