The Value of Kobe Bryant (article)

    Link

Imagine a team that owns, at the same time, both the NBA's best defense and its worst offense. This scrappy bunch of overachievers, not blessed with a ton of offensive talent, nonetheless manages to stay in most games before falling just short.

This team exists not just in your imagination but in reality - sort of. This team is the 2005-06 Los Angeles Lakers, sans Kobe Bryant. Through Friday, this Web site's database indicated that, without Bryant in the game, the Lakers were scoring at a rate of just 90.2 points per 100 possessions while surrendering just 95.7 points per 100 possessions. No full NBA team is scoring less than 100 points per 100 possessions; the only team with a Defensive Rating below 100 is San Antonio (99.6).

You might think this is a common effect for a team with its superstar off the floor, but the Bryant-less Lakers take this to an extreme. Bryant's presence has been worth 22.0 points per 100 possessions to the Lakers offense this season, far and away the biggest difference made on offense by any NBA player:
Really, you can't look at statistics to determine whether a player is a ballhog. Like pornography as defined by Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, I know a ballhog when I see one. Given the positive effect Bryant has had on his teammates, it seems to me that the amount Bryant is shooting is not only not hurting the Lakers, it's the reason for the team's offensive success. Considering how much Bryant has helped his teammates, they certainly can't complain.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    nice read.

      Yes!
I want to make love to Kobe Bryant, he's the GOAT.

How blatantly obvious is the article, though? I mean of course the Lakers are going to suck without Kobe in the game. I'm surprised they even score without him. Their offense consists of passing the ball to Kobe and watching. Lamar Odom does his thing without Kobe, but that's about it.

Also, does this take into effect that when Kobe is out of the game, a lot of the other starters are out getting rest as well? The offense certainly isn't going to be as good with multiple bench players on the court while your superstar and a few of your starters are on the bench.

LOL at Wally Sczerzbiakcsfsahkiak being the third biggest offensive difference maker in the league.

in conclusion... Kobe's ideal team is

PG... Kobe, someone to pass the ball the SG

SG... Kobe, he is here to shoot to his hearts desire

SF... Kobe, someone to cover for the SG when he gambles on D

PF..., hmm Lamar, so he can take the blame when the team loses

C... Kobe, so he can get the rebound and pass it to the SG who can shoot to his hearts desire

Bench: Kobe Kobe and yes, Kobe

        That about covers it

That's everything, all the stats you need

He makes his teammates better. Gets them rebounds, assist, points, plays D for them, and never ever takes the blame. Greatness!

Lets say it 3 time Ko-be Ko-be Ko-be Staples Center style

i love how posters like you continue to state "kobe gets the ball and everybody else watches".. its apparent these posters don't watch laker games rather highlights or not at all.

I wasn't me it was that guy who wrote the article...i just taught it was an interesting stat. And if Nashy led the league last year in this it does have some merit.

Kobe will still hog it up from time to time but hey you take the good with the bad

That must be a lot of people who don't watch Lakers games... and I can't believe so many professional, well-paid columnists who don't actually watch Lakers games and write the same thing I did. Probably a conspiracy against Kobe.

Kobe a ballhog Unheard of. His teammates said so.

                        He's a pass first SG

He loves to bask in the assist department

Its apart of the mamba's attack

if you have watched a substantial amount of laker games.. fine. i'm fine with your opinion. unless you have league pass you probably havent. sure there have been a fair amount of games where he's "ball hogged", but it's not near the level of bad basketball he has been known to play in past years. when you're the best player on the team there are going to be games/times/moments where that player should be taking the majority of shots.

want to link or provide names of these many well paid columnists
