if you look at his career at UCLA, then yes Walton is one of the best players in basketball history. however, you can't use 3 years of solid, injury-free NBA play and classify him as a great NBA player. i take nothing away from Walton's 3 good years. hell, the man did win a title and league MVP in that 3 year stretch. however, in order to be truly great in the NBA you have to have longevity. i still don't feel that Walton should have been named as one of the 50 greatest players in the NBA. as much as i love Shaq, he didn't deserve it at that time either because he wasn't at that level of dominance that he got a year or two later. i always felt that the 50 greatest should be chosen for what they did in the league and not what they are "going to do".

by the way, i've seen tapes of Walton's UCLA career and his time with the Portland Trail Blazers.

I don't agree with this. Sure Walton was a great basketball player, but I don't think just because you were great at a sport means you have freedom to say whatever you want. Eric Dickerson and Tim Haradaway are two examples of great players in their sports who stink as commentators. Then you have guys like Joe Buck or Pat Summerall that were not great players in their sports, but are good commentators.

Walton just likes to rave about NBA bigmen. The good ones are rare, so when he gets the chance he's gives as much praise as Dickie V.
