    Wednesday, May 31, 2006 - 11:01 AM
    NBL, ESPN

Respected ESPN writer Chad Ford has compared Townsville Crocodiles NBL star Brad Newley with San Antonio Spurs Argentinean sensation Manu Ginobili and Boston Celtics legend Danny Ainge after watching the Australian play in the US.

Ford, who writes for the internationally renowned ESPN website, saw Newley train at the famous A.T.T.A.C.K. Athletics gymnasium in Chicago as the Philips Championship star prepares for the NBA Draft on June 28.

“I watched him in workouts on Thursday and Friday and saw him play in the five-on-five game on Saturday, matched up against Denham Brown, one of the better defenders in college basketball last season,” Ford wrote in his pre-Draft column.

“When I first saw him in workouts, I assumed he was a jump shooter like many European two guards. But in the scrimmage, Newley showed he is very aggressive putting the ball on the floor and taking it to the basket.”

“His game resembles Manu Ginobili's more than it does that of most Euros. He doesn't have the quickness or creativity of Ginobili, but he's a good athlete, and he actually likes contact. He held up well against a very physical Brown. Those who remember how Danny Ainge used to play would recognize some of the same feistiness in Newley.”

Newley evidently earned the respect of the players on the court as well with Ford writing that one of his opponents told him after he scrimmaged with the Aussie that the Croc was “one tough S.O.B.”

Ford also noted that Newley’s long-range shooting was better than initial reports indicated and that the Australian’s passing was impressive.

“International scouts say Newley isn't known for his jump shooting over there, but his shot was falling in the game. He hit several NBA-distance threes and a couple of midrange shots.”

“Newley also is a good passer and with a feel for setting up his teammates.”

“Defensively he was pretty good. He moved his feet very well and showed he is stronger than he looks.”

Ford also reported that Newley was set to play in the Orlando pre-draft camp which will be held at the Disney World Resort in Florida from June 6 – 10.

“Given his great feel for the game and his aggression on the offensive end, he could be an Orlando pre-draft camp sleeper, just as Beno Udrih was a couple of years ago. Only three NBA teams -- the Clippers, Pistons and Rockets -- have gone to see him play in Australia, so he's a bit of unknown.”

    You are kidding right?

Firstly, seeing him play myself, I can say he is barely a good player in Australia.

Secondly, there are 100's of players this good and better in the US.

He's white and non-American so he gets an article. LMAO.

Yes it is sad to say. White players just dont have the pegasus bone (third bone in upper leg that black and some spanish athletes have). Thats why they cant survive in todays game of running and jumping versus skill.

you wouldn't write something like this last year this time manu had an MVP performance through the playoffs.

I agree partially but basketball is a lot more than jumping and running

He still flops more than anyone in the NBA.

The runners and jumpers dont allow those who cant run and jump to do much. Less your 7ft tall like Irk Nowitki. See what happens when Reddick enters the league. Reddick< Kyle Korver strickly based on his being 6'2

Basketball was more of a fundamental game back then. He was also 6'9

So your saying if Larry Bird was in his prime today, he would have no chance against these so called pegasus boned players?

He was 6'9, so refrencing the statement that I made about this the answer is yes he would have a chance. If he were a guard, and 6'2 or 3 he would be hard pressed. Kirk Heinrich, and Steve Nash are anomallies (if I spelled that correctly which I think I didnt). Not to be racist, it just is what it is.

Where in the world did you get this "pegasus bone" theory? Are you joking or what?

Its real. I have seen it in x-rays. Its a third bone in the upper thigh. It effects the density of leg muscles and the ability to develop said mucscles. Of course their is all the twitch muscle fiber, kineisiology stuff.

Has any one else ever heard of this? I am not doubting your word or anything, but I have never in my life heard of this. This bone, is exclusive to black and some latin american men?
