Gary is the best, no contest. Payton lead his Sonics to the NBA finals, just as Kidd lead his Nets. Both great PG's, the thing that seperates Payton, is his FG%, defense, scoring, and turnovers. For careers, Payton is a 47% FG shooter, while Kidd barely breaks 40%. Kidd averages 1 turnover more than Payton. Payton 18ppg, to Kidds career 14. Also Payton is a better leader, and has the ability to do more with less. Yes, Kidd lead the Nets to the Finals, but if his team were in the Western Conference, they wouldn't of made out of first round. The east was so up in the air last year, and has been for a while. Defensively, Payton always shuts down the opposing teams best player, for years. Take Kidd away, Nets still make Eastern playoffs, take Payton away, Sonics up there in the Lebron James contest for draft.
Next group, Nash is #3, skillwise. Takeaway the 1 or 2 superstars in Dallas, and Nash's #'s would go up. He plays 10mins less than most of these PG's because they have such a good supporting cast. Francis is below Nash becuase in my mind, Francis should really be a 2-guard, just like Iverson. The turnovers, and lack of assists bring him to #4. Baron Davis and Stephon Marbury is kind of a toss up. Davis is inconsistent, and has had some injury issues, and I beleive he doesn't try as hard now that he has that big contract he wanted. People get on Marbury for hogging the ball, and turning the ball over too much, and taking bad shots, but for his FG% has been on the rise in recent years, hes got over 8apg, and he has fewer turnovers than Francis. But Baron gets the nod, because of his rebounding, steals, and fewer turnovers.
Next up, Jason Terry. He seems to be forgotten a lot in top PG talk, because the Hawks have not been good. His scoring is down from his 2 years of 19ppg, but his assists are at 7.7 now, because he has people to pass to, and almost 2 steals a game. 20ppg, 6apg, 4rpg, good FG/FT/3pt shooting, and low turnovers puts Cassell at #8. Arenas falls in at #9, if his scoring were a little better, he would be higher up. But I get this feeling that he scores a lot because, no one besides Jamison can score on the Warriors. Andre Miller may appear low, but his assists are way down, as are his scoring, rebounds, steals, and FG%, while his Turnovers are up.
Alvin Williams is having a great year. 16ppg, 5apg, 4rpg, 1spg, and his FG/FT/3pt is up from recent years. Also, he has the fewest turnovers, just over 1 per game, than anyone on my PG list. Mike Bibby is #12, he has 1 good playoff series and people think he is elite. He isn't going to score 20ppg in this league, and don't say he would on a bad team, cuz he was on a bad team for more years than a good one. His assists are at 5 per game since comming to sacromento, while his scoring hasnt changed. #13 goes to John Stockton. People say hes old, not the same player, can't do what he used to, and they are right. But 11ppg, 7apg, almost 2spg, and great FG% in recent years near 50%, in limited minutes, is good enough for me.
#14 goes to a shocker, Jason Williams! Sure, he isn't a premier shooter, but did you know his turnovers are down over 1 per game this year, to a small 2.2? His FT% is up nearly 15%, to go along with 7apg, with no one to throw the rock too. I don't know when, or if Terrell Brandon will fully recover, but hes a great player, and not that old (32). In recent years, over 15ppg, 8apg, and near 2spg, and a great leader, hes #15.
Now to the lower tier of players, 16-20. Eric Snow, when healthy can put up 2spg, 12ppg, 8apg, and play good defense, that gives him the nod for #16. Next, #17 Jamal Tinsley isn't asked to do much on the Pacers, becuase they got a good cast. So 8apg, 8ppg, and 2spg is great. Tony parker and his 13ppg, and 5apg put him at #18. Can anyone guess who #19 is? He averages almost 15ppg, 6apg, and on his 4th team in 6 years? The correct answer is Troy Hudson, of Minnesota. #20, last on the list, goes to.... Darrell Armstrong. Hes getting up there in years, (34), and his scoring is down, but they dont need it when McGrady is scoring 50 points a game. 12ppg, 2spg, 4rpg, is his regular numbers, but this year a little lower, due to smaller minutes.
#21, although not up there, is Nick Van Excel. Is probably better than 10-15 of the starting PG's in the NBA, but he plays for Dallas, which has Nash. If starting, 18ppg, 8apg, under 3 TO per game would be expected.
Best of the rest: Jay Williams, Chauncey Billups, Larry Hughes, and Tony Delk. Travis Best, Howard Eisley, Dajuan Wagner, Chucky Atkins and Derek Fisher. (In no order).
Just my spare change.
Beleive what you like.
Payton owns all
