Re: The Dark side of Phil Jackson (long)

So......... this was supposed to be a negative article on Phil? On the contrary... this was quite a positive article. Phil Jackson is hired to WIN ballgames. He does it. He does it his way, with his mind games, and that's that. Get in his way, you get pushed out of town.

This kind of thing happens all the time in sports, in business, in life. Every day at every company in every nation. For all you naive people out there, realize this is how business is done and done successfully. Everybody get over their "the world is a perfect place and everyone is nice" perception. One of meaning arseholes around was Michael Jordan. Nobody was more an arrogant a$$ to his fellow players and most around him than MJ. He did whatever he wanted. Didn't like the coach? Fine, go to management and get him fired (he was one of the first to ever actually do this). Didn't like team members and how they fit in? Traded. Didn't like their attitude? Berated. Cut.

Reality is not rosey. Sports are NOT a game, it's not bean bag toss on a Saturday night with beers, it's about money, power, and success. Everything else? Well, that's what losers get......

Wow, you think MJ had control of executive decisions such as getting coaches fired and players cut/traded, huh?

MJ and Phil -- depending on the period It's all about winning and building cohesiveness. If MJ is your guy, you want to put players that respect him and will work with him. If he says, "this guy is out" then he's out. Happened more than a few occasions... and I don't blame him. If I'm the star player and your offense is built around you, I'd want guys I know, trust, and want on my team.

You dont think he had that control? All great players have that control. Magic, Isiah and Bird all used that power at times. Its well known that Magic got Paul Westhead fired. MJ definently had that much pull during his time with the Bulls.

Phil Jackson is the beneficiary of two of the most dominant players in the history of basketball. Shaq and Jordan. Period.

I felt the same way, and I've always thought that Phil road the coattails of the players he had around him to success, and that he wasn't all that much of a coach... But I must admit I was impressed at what he accomplished this past season with the Lakers... I mean, he had Kobe Bryant and precious little else.

What did he accomplish? A first round exit? Larry Brown did that with the woe is me Clippers years ago. What did they accomplish that no other team with one star hasnt?

                          Boston, Philly, ORL, Minny, etc...

Hey, good to see you back. It's been a while... I think since about the end of March Madness. It's too bad Maryland couldn't have gone further in the NITs.

Anyways, I agree with your comment, but to an extent. Phil Jackson is a great juggler of egos, and not many coaches can hold teams together like he can. Sure, the role players may change... but this guy kept Kobe and Shaq together for about two years longer than anyone else could've. He keeps his star players happy, and with the way his teams are built, that's all he needs to do.

Put Phil Jackson with the Celtics or Warriors, I doubt he'll turn them into championship teams... but he does a good job with star-oriented teams.

But then again, who can turn the Celtics or Warriors into championship teams?

I think you fail to give Jerry West the credit he deserves. Those last two years post West were not very happy ones.
