    Why I can't Respect Coach K

Web Posted: 09/01/2006 10:24 PM CDT

    San Antonio Express-News

According to a reliable USA Basketball snoop, Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski decided the final roster spot for the FIBA World Championships was center Brad Miller instead of Spurs' forward Bruce Bowen.

Bowen supposedly got the ax because Coach K wanted one more big man for the tournament in Japan and because Miller had shot the ball better from 3-point range in exhibition games in Asia.
Hindsight, of course, is flawless, but in light of Team USA's 101-95 loss to Greece on Friday, that was an idiotic decision because Coach K did not see fit to even play Miller in the game that ended America's dream of regaining the top spot in world basketball.

Among the 24-man cadre from which the USA roster was filled, Bowen was the only member of the NBA's first-team All-Defensive unit available to play in Japan. Kobe Bryant, the only other member of the group who has made an All-Defense first team, was injured.

So think about it. One of the premier defensive players in the world was not good enough for a team that stressed defense. Krzyzewski had insisted it was Priority No.1.

Greece won Friday's game by running the same play, a high pick and roll, over and over and over.
John Stockton and Karl Malone never ran it better.

And Krzyzewski never made the right adjustment to stop it.

How stubborn do you have to be to not try a little zone defense when you're being eaten alive by a pick and roll?

Krzyzewski said something else after the first day of training camp that was both surprising and unsettling. He said he had been greatly impressed by Joe Johnson; that before seeing him in practice he didn't know how good Johnson was.

It was the first clue that the accomplished college coach needed someone to clue him in about the NBA personnel on his roster.

Team USA's head coach needs to know his own personnel better than Krzyzewski did during the FIBA tournament.

Bowen discovered that Coach K was clueless about his own defensive versatility when the coach questioned Bowen's ability to defend Puerto Rican point guard Carlos Arroyo in an exhibition game. Bowen suggested he consult assistant coach Mike D'Antoni, well aware the Phoenix Suns head coach had seen Bowen defending Shawn Marion, Boris Diaw, Raja Bell and, occasionally, Steve Nash.

After Friday's loss Krzyzewski said Team USA needed to learn the international game better.
Perhaps D'Antoni, who coached in Italy for eight years and obviously knows NBA personnel better than Krzyzewski, would have been a better choice for head coach.

Now the U.S. has to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in the Tournament of the Americas next summer in Venezuela. I wonder how many of the 12 who have to play for the bronze medal, instead of gold, in Japan, are going to want to spend another long summer overseas.

Bowen promises he will be back in the cadre when it convenes for practice next summer.
Perhaps his defensive prowess won't be wasted then.
    "Boo this man (Coach K)!"

This was one of the first things I thought of as well.

Colangelo and Krzyzewski both said the team will have more role players, defenders, and better shooters.

Then they end up cutting the poster child of role players that can shoot and play great D.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Guess what? Old-*** Bruce Bowen is the best defender in the league. So it WAS a bad decision for a team who was STRESSING DEFENSE!

I dont like Bowen for Team USA though, either. He is a one-on-one defender, but the international game is a team game with little isolation. Usually you send a guy like Bowen after the best perimeter scorer on the other team, but it can be pretty gray in FIBA play who that player actually is.

As far as his shooting, he can only shoot from the far corners. I've charted some of the Spurs games from this year, he literally runs out to the corners and waits there. I dont think Coach K would have called that play a lot.

What they need defensively are guys who know how to close out on outside shooters and read pick-and-rolls. Not just one guy but all of them need to be able to do that.

Agreed, but then that was the mistake when he wasn't inviting defenders to the team. Think about it also... They could of had Battier and Bowen on the court, and if Kobe wasn't injured, there is your 3rd defender. All 3 could have really held the outside shooting to a minimum.

Know what you mean about Bowen camping in the corners... I watch as many games as I can (I live in NY, but since they are good, they are on 30 times a year)... that is his duty, run from corner to corner. If someone needs to dish out to the corners, he's there to bury one (He has a high 3pt%)... he keeps the defense a little modest too... if he was to station anywhere else, you better believe the defense would take advantage and start doubling or tripling down on Duncan.

I dont like Kobe being the point on offense for that trio, though.

Back to the original topic, as far as Coach K picking Brad Miller, did Coach K even use him that much?

didn't even use him in the most important game, where we could have used perimeter defenders.

actually, i saw the us team get a lot of open 3s from the corners. perhaps bowen would have been a good offensive option as well.

                        Re: Why I can't Respect Coach K

These teams have played together for years, and us as Americans think we can put together a team, practice for a few months and play in a tournament that heavily relies on shooting with the zone defenses teams play.

I think Bowen would have helped, but they still wouldn't have won versus Greece, and much less the gold medal even if they had him.

These types of international basketball competitions rely on outside shooting. Add a Michael Redd and a Ray Allen to the roster, then I think they wouldve won gold.

I don't think Bowen would have been the better choice over Brad Miller. Bowen is a good one-on-one defender, but he struggles against cutting, Euro style offense. He's also too much of a liability on the offensive end.

If you want to criticize Coach K for letting his team shoot 25+ threes in the game against Greece, or for not getting the ball in the post enough, go ahead... but to criticize him for cutting the worst overall basketball player on the original roster is not a legitimate reason why he shouldn't have been the coach for the job.

and battier, which is a bowen wanna be, was one of the best USA players in the tournament.

bowen should be in. instead of one of the 3 superstars. you´re fine with 2 of them and a role player.

redd would also help, but you can also have a spot up shooter role player type of guy. wasen´t redick cut also?
