That's what I was thinking when I read some of SPTO's comments in page 1. Where I would draw the line as far as rule changes go for fixing the image is the dress code with the suits. That in itself should be enough to try to fix the NBA's image of the thugs, the rags to riches and still dress like a rag ballers.

On the other hand, what Stern should put all his attention on is the officiating. Reading these boards made me realize how awful NBA officiating is (BBB.net, here). Watching the games and seeing how even a scream after a dunk gets you a T makes matters worse. Watching the games and watching the replays where most fouls that are called are blatantly clean blocks, swipes, is just awful. Stern should bring physical interior defense back. I want to see LeBron get pounded and get clobbered by Shaq, Yao, or some other bigger guys, and still make the basket, rather than LeBron barely recieving any contact driving the lane and gets the And1. This makes every play more spectacular, more special and more awing to little kids.

Problem is, it hasn't brought back one single fan that left.

Most fans problems with this is, he's nto concentrating on thhe issues of the game.

Its pretty much like asking VC to improve 2K's graphics but leave the bugs in the game.

Stern has taken his power a bit far, I think.

With the new ball I think he probably could have waited on that. Or at least let the players try out some other balls first instead of just forcing this particular one down the players throats. I think that he does mean well on some of the things he does, but the way that he has gone about doing things has been questionable.

The new rules to increase scoring really only just increases fouls. If he wanted to make a faster paced game just shorten the shot clock.

And all this power he is giving to the refs without any checks or balances is just crazy. I like the no whining rule actually, if it is implemented correctly, but there are other things that are seriously wrong like how the refs actually call the game and the star treatment.

I pretty much agree, but we are only 3-4 games into the season. Let's see if the people who left, come back later in the season with the product they see on TV.

I read a quote by Stern that he wants to bring families back to the games. Based on marketing research, the NBA office must have felt that not enough families are coming to the games, only a fraction. Heck, I've shared season tickets of the Bucks with 3 other families for the last 19 years. We still have the same families since day 1. Personally, it's all about supporting the team and players and some diversion of entertainment on top of that. It really doesn't matter where the Bucks are in the standings for me. Just put a competitive team on the floor. Frankly, sometimes, that doesn't happen on any given night.

So if I take a crazy insane player like Ron Artest, and put him in a suit, he becomes less crazy and insane? And if i take a player with tattoo's and cornrows, like iverson, and put him in a suit then all of a sudden the braids and tats aren't a big deal?

Maybe it changed the perception where ever you are, but it did absolutely nothing in my neck of the woods. People still feel the same way about players no matter what you dress them up in.

I had no idea that all a person had to do to clean up their image is put on a suit. I guess i'll tell my drunk uncle to stop attending those AA meetings and go get himself a double breasted 3 piece from burlington.

Hooking, I agree with, but MJ's traveling, no. I see many fans complain about that, but I rarely saw MJ travel.

A majority of these guys are millionares, I know people that make $30,000/year that have to wear suits to work. Welcome to the real world NBA players, all they have to do is wear it to and from the game, not for 8-12+ hours a day.

I guess it is all how you perceive things.

Take my 11 year old for example. He probably doesn't remember Artest when he was a crazy and insane person. He did tell me a few years ago he didn't like AI because he said he looked like a thug. Maybe this year seeing AI he doesn't feel that way.

Of course you can't change a person for who they are deep inside "just by putting a suit on them." However, Stern's office must feel that you can by marketing a product this way.

It's not just the suit rule, Artest is on a short leash in the league. It's the tightening of the technicals/palming calls on the court as well.

As I said in this thread, Stern has been quoted he wants more families in the stands. His office must have determined there are less families in the stands recently. I would imagine if Stern's office wants more families in the stands, he wants a marketable product to show, wouldn't you agree?

Yes I do. I am back to watching the NBA again. I like the new rules. I don't want my son seeing players crying to the refs and watch them kick balls into the stands and such. I love the college game for the same reason. Just like the NHL last year,NBA players need to understand the new rules and abide by them otherwise expect a T. Shut up and let your coach do the bitching. Period. Stern has me back in the NBA fold and I really am enjoying the season so far.
