    Artest-- Are tranquilizers necessary?

I would like to recommend to the league that they have someone on hand at the games to avoid the carnage everyone had to be witness to the other night. This person would be located somewhere in the arena with a rifle poised and ready to fire tranquilizer darts when the next time Artest gets out of control.

you are way off base Riley and his assitant coach have to shoulder just as much of the blame. Artest is not out of control, if he was why would his gm and teammates fully support him. Isaiah said after the game last night that he was the reason that they won the game. Basketball is an emotional sport. What bothers me are the coaches who engage in these arguments but then act like the player is the only one out of line. Just like Green Bay's coach who initiated that tirade between he and Sapp. If you are so much higher than the players, don't bring yourself down to their level, but know if you come down from your throne be prepared to get dirty.

When I saw the highlight it looked like Riley was trying to stay away from an argument.

Artest jumped in the middle of the converstion between Riley and the ref, and Riley told him to get away from me, I don't want to talk to you and tried to walk away. Artest went to the Heat bench more than once, and he acted very unprofessional. He gets paid millions to play, not talk, and start fights. Bball is emotional at times, but not a place to act like Mike Tyson on a bad day.

Im way off base? I live in Chicago and have seen him interviewed a number of times. I would also like to let you in on what he did upon being traded. Upon hearing this news he grabs every picture he can find of himself posted in the building and is leaving with it while being interviewed. He is a petulant child who is getting paid a lot of money oinly so he can behave in a way no one wants to see. MAybe this is one of the reasons the league is struggling in popularity compared to a few years ago? Its unfortunate too because he plays good defense. Truthfully from the whole sequence of events that took place I was most bothered by his foul against Butler. This is a classic example of another classless basketball player who feels he can act however he wants.

                    Re: Artest-- Are tranquilizers necessary?

Oh yes, Artest is out of line this year in particular. He leads the League in Flagrant Fouls (t-B.Miller) and his behavior while playing the Heat was out of line. Was any suspension handed down? It seems to be the only way to get thru to *some* of these players is to suspend them WITHOUT pay for 7 games or more depending on the situation. I mean a 50,000 fine is a slap on the wrist for these guys. Take away game pay and plenty of it, and maybe the money will do the talking. The NBA wonders why popularity is falling year after year.

Also, I am not singling out Artest, but it is an example of what happens when players getting paid millions, act like babies. All the way back to Van Exel bumping the ref, Tim Hardaway losing it in Denver, and countless other actions by numerous players. This is not how a "proffesional" should act. Could any of you get away with throwing a baby tantrum where YOU work?? There is my 2 cents.

                        Re: Artest-- Are tranquilizers necessary?

Are you bothered by how much money he makes. The amount of money that any person makes doing something legal is none of our business. By implying that he needed tranquilizers is in fact calling him a beast. That is what is way over the line. Pat Riley even engaging him in conversation is out of the line. Is Artest justified in his behavior at times, no. But neither are we in implying that he is an animal that can't control himself. No one in the Pacer organization is complaining, not the GM, not the coach, no one.

As far as where we work, no you can't behave like that, but we are not in a proffession were our co-workers and competition bang on us for 48 minutes. Basketball is a sport, it is not an office job with a cubicle and lunch breaks. In every sport you are going to have some show of raw aggression (except figure skating etc). The ratings of ther NBA going down have nothing to do with the physical play. At the height of the popularity, you had the Bad Boy Pistons, The Knicks, etc. The person throwing the baby tantrum was Riley in the news conference after the game. It takes two to argue!!

What else would you compare it to? How is he not acting entirely on impulse without regard to reason or consequence? You taking this liberalist im going to lecture you stance only enables such behavior. Yes the money is relevent. The money is whaat has created the sense of entitlement. The sense of entitlement that makes you feel its ok to flip off the crowd is part of what Im talking about. The sense of entitlement that makes you feeo you can do whatever you want because you feel youve been wronged in some way however slight. Does it matter how the Pacers franchise respond when the video speaks for itself? I dont need to know how they respond. As far as riley and this it takes two to tango argument goes. Whether Riley said something or not Artest is still out of control and nothing he could have said justifies his ridiculous behavior. Also, there is precedent for this petulant behwavior from Artest, however how often has Riley been part of a confrontation like this?
