I would like to recommend to the league that they have someone on hand at the games to avoid the carnage everyone had to be witness to the other night. This person would be located somewhere in the arena with a rifle poised and ready to fire tranquilizer darts when the next time Artest gets out of control.

The sense of entitlement that you speak of is nothing more than unabashed ego. Those two would have gotten in the same argument at a rec league game. It does matter how the Pacers respond because they are the ones that know him best. You and I are outsiders, your geographic location doesn't give you a better vantage point than Isaiah THomas, Reggie Miller, and others who have publicly supported him. Out of control is Jerry Sloan pushing the ref, or Robbins from Oakland going WOL before the Super Bowl. Ego is what Riley and Artest are on. Riley has a bigger sense of entitlement than ARtest because he maintains how he has never gotten into a dicussion with a player like that, but if you watch the video carefully, the second altercation did not involve Riley until he stepped in. The NBA agrees with (or at least David Stern) because of the suspension, but Riley should be suspended as well. The money is a big deal to you, not to the NBA players. They are competitive in nature. That is what makes them profesional atheletes. Sure they enjoy the money and try to make as much as they can, but once they step on the court it is about pride, respect, and a competitive fire that burns inside. Artest crossed the line, but so did Riley. If one is suspended both needed to be!

"The only thing that I was upset with two nights ago was the hit on Caron (Butler). The other stuff is just foolish behavior," Riley said Wednesday. "But I'd like to have two or three Ron Artests myself, know what I'm saying? He's a hell of a player, a very competitive player, and maybe this sort of gets him to focus a little bit more on what he has to do."

                Re: Artest-- Are tranquilizers necessary?

Let me put it this way, I dont care how the Pacers respond. " If it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck...". I saw what I saw and there is no explanation that would justify ridiculous behavior and after hearing Artests response he basically has no explanation. I dont dispute anything about sloan being out of line too but no one ran the gambit like artest. The shoving, the in-your-face trash talkking and showboating, the flipping off the crowd. I think the last point reveals the sense of entitlement. It indicates that he has totally lost sight of what pays his salary--the fans. He needs to also understand this and that he is not playing in the rec league. I find it incredible you defend him and yes you are enabling when you try to shift blame and focus on people like Riley and Sloan. Like I said, with Artest it was a range of acts. As far as proximiity goes, I dont know if it matters but I can tell you that when Artest was making an *** out of himself walking off with the pictures I can tell you it was on local tv. I dont know if people in texas saw this. Another example of Artests total lack of professionalism is when Stackhouse scored 50 something points in the United Center Artest made some comments that were offensive expressing indifference. His comments were played on local sports talk radio, I dont know how privy people in other parts of the country were to this. So, believe what you want. All I can say is, if you like this pay the $50 to go to a basketball game to see this. I think most people are turned off by this. I dont even like watching this on tv for that matter but thats me (im kind of sick of seeing it on sportscenter as well). As far as Riley saying he wants an Artest, would this be because he suits the style of play that he used with the Knicks--the style of play people complain has robbed the league of entertainment value? As far as his comments too, he is probably a little ashamed of the whole event even though it is obviously primarily Artest at fault.

Artest was wrong for what he did. My contention with you was the fact that you stated that he needed tranquilizers. You are right, the fans do pay the salaries of the atheletes, but they pay the coaches salaries as well. There can be no double standard. Things happen in the heat of battle, however the blame has to be shared. A coach has to maintain a level of professionalism as well.

Whos really saying the coaches are right. Why are you so fixated on the coachs? Would you have been happier if I said medication? Whats the difference? In either case Artest would need this because he has no control over himself. He frequently has episodes. Really wathcing the highlights on sports center had more of a feel of Barnum and Bailey, or, better yet, it reminded of me of a show I saw where this angry circus elephant was on the lose. In both cases you had no idea how it was going to end. I suppose you will defend Artest if he attacks a fan? You are an enabler who espouses rhetoric coming from a required 100level sociology class you were required to take in college. I ask you if you really believe in what you say or are you simply regurgitating rhetoric?

Using "big words" is not of measure of intelligence, it is a mask designed to cover up for other failures. I find it very amusing that you feel as if I am backing Artest's actions. I have stated over and over that he was wrong. You have called me an enabler because I choose to look at things objectively. I suppose that you have never acted out of character in the heat of ther moment? The only difference was that there were no TV cameras recording the whole incident. No highlight shows, or people making comments about your actions. No non- atheletic journalists who watch the tape over and over in slow mtion so they can write a story that will sell papers. No ESPN to replay the event 10-15 times a day for the purpose of ratings. Nobody cares when you mess up because your talent is not being displayed on such a public stage, so you can calm down and say I'm sorry at a later date to the individual that you got into it with. And then move on with your life because " hey, people make mistakes". Riley and Artest both said that it was a heat of the moment episode, and that there was no disrespect towards either side. My criticism of you is your inference that a controlling substance is neccessary when young men, who are playing a kids game, have an altercation. The whole title of your post was ridiculous and unneccessary. Your position has yet to acknowledge any wrongdoing on Riley's part. You thought that it was funny, and free speech gives you the right, but it also allows me to disagree. I don't speak rhetoric, i speak objectively.
