#2 pick is the much better position to be in if you are a GM. That is obvious. Assuming Oden comes out, which isn't definite yet, then as the GM of the team with the #2 pick, you can do no wrong. It's a no brainer selection because you can't make the wrong pick. It may not turn out for the best, but nobody would criticize selecting Durant or Oden over Horford, Wright, et al.
As for the Durant vs. Oden argument, I am a staunch Durant supporter. I do not care about your "once every twenty years argument" surrounding Oden. I do not care that each team needs a center more than they need a PF/SF/slasher type. None of this argument gets to the crux of the matter, which is, who is the better player? I think Durant is unquestionably better right now, tomorrow, and for the next 20 years. And at such a young age, he has astronomical potential.
Durant has that unquantifiable characteristic that all the fantastic players have. You know, when the guy has the ball and you know it is going into the hoop before he even takes the shot. I have no idea of quantifying that, but I know Durant has it, and I know he's going to be a disgusting ball player. I take him over Oden and worry about working out the logistical lineup issues later.
