    Re: 2008 Dunk Contest

The only reason yall trashing the dunk contest right now is just because there aren't like any All-Star high profile players in it. It's been high quality the last few years. I mean, for real, there's only so much stuff you can do in the dunk contest without it getting repetitive.

You got guys like Iguodala catching the ball off the back of the backboard and whipping it around and dunking it backwards. We've got Dwight Howard putting a sticker up 12 feet on the backboard. Gerald Green with a two handed windmill off the side of the backboard?

Yall talking about how "it's not like it was back in the day". We hit a drought and now we've got the young guys in here doing ridiculous things like that. You can't just have someone come in and do a windmill and look for a 50 like Dominique did. Bottom line is that a lot of the dunks that were done in the dunk contest back in the day wouldn't hold up now. Half of them are being done in games.

And it's not like the commish and other guys are stopping guys like VC or LeBron from participating. They send out invites, those guys just decline like "Oh, my ankle is hurt and I need to rest" or whatever it is. A lot of them are like "Oh, I don't have anything to prove" or "I don't want to be knokwn just as a dunker."

RR, the rules are you have to be in your first three years I believe.

I think the one point I agree with you is that you can only do so much with dunks. After VC shut it down in 2000, what else is there to do?

I specifically recall blaming too many rule changes and the 3 year restriction. Wack stuff like the spin the wheel, give the coke head Chris Anderson 50 tries, and just when you thought that couldn't be topped, give Nate Robinson 500 tries then give him the trophy.

First off, nobody mentioned Nique or "back in the day" Second, Nique had not only creativity in his time, but a high vertical and POWER most of these wannabe's don't have.

There is a 3 year and younger rule instated so NO they CANT participate... hence the name Sprite Rising Stars slam dunk contest

The dunk contest hasn't been interesting since the days of MJ, Nique, and Spudd.

For me personally, the Dunk contest is on the same level as the X-Games. They were both can't miss events when I was younger, me and my friends would go outside after and try and recreate the tricks and dunks. As I've grown older, they both seem more and more repetitive. IDK just my two cents.

Well I kinda see where you're coming from, but if you remember the dunk contest with J-Rich and Fred Jones, Fred Jones basically won because he had a better missed dunk than J-Rich, and it was horrible because nobody made a dunk in the final round, so they had to change it to give players more chances. Ironically the next two years were taken to extremes with Birdman and Nate.

...and 2 of the three of them didnt win jack did they?
Nope, and the reason for that is there were better dunks. That's why I think the dunk contest is back. You can be innovative and creative and still lose to someone else who does some other crazier stuff after you.

There is no 3 year rule. It was changed so YES they CAN participate. Remember Ricky Davis? He said he wanted to be in it and he was when he was with Boston in 2004 which was his SEVENTH season.

                    1. That was hot

                    2. Some of them didn't look like the basket was 10 feet though

                    3. James Flight needs an honorary invite

                    4. The best dunkers aren't in the league

4a. I'd be thoroughly entertained if they had an NBA vs. Amateurs dunk contest

That's what I was thinking when I saw that vid. I skimmed through the middle part. Was Fontanette's 720 dunk in there?

I love watching Springs dunk, btw. So fast and explosive. He has a very unique, but efficient style of dunking. It's a real shame his family issues didn't allow him to go through the proper channels and get coached.

Yup the 720 dunk was in there. And yes, some of those And1 guys have some real talent, but never got the chance to get on the right avenue. Now it's too late for mostly all of them to go the the league.

I kind've agree with you........There have been some great dunkers. AI, Green and others have all done some sick dunks. I though Josh Smith was awesome his windmills look better than anything Nique did....Hell, he windmilled from damn near the free throw line, lol......

You could get Green, AI, Josh Smith, and James White in there, you'd have a great dunk contest right there.
