If Kobe was a spot up 3 point shooter who only took wide open shots typically unguarded, he'd too would have a great 3 point %.

Re: 3 Pt Shootout Contestants Announced
A person who gets labeled as a "shooter" is one who's primary skill, or primary means of putting the ball in the basket is by taking jumpshots. Very good shooter from the perimeter able to consistently knock down the jumper. A "shooter" doesn't create off the dribble much, if at all, and will primarily just catch and shoot when attempting to score...Kyle Korver, Jason Kapono.
...This is the kind of player that if you go into a gym you've never been to for a pick up game, and your buddy points to your man and says, "Stay on him. He's a shooter."
A person who gets labeled as a "scorer" is just that. Scores period. It does not matter how he puts the ball in the bucket. He just does it. Whether it be posting up, driving, taking jumpshots, etc. A "scorer" can create for himself off the dribble and is not dependent on his teammates to make things happen for him. He can score with the ball in his hands. They are very tough to guard 1 on 1...Corey Maggette, Carmello Anthony.
...This is the kind of player you choose to guard, but then your friend comes up and says,"You go get mine, I got him." or "Let's switch.", after the "scorer" has been killing you.
Now with that said, there are players who can be labeled both. Kobe is one. As he falls into both categories. LeBron is a scorer in the NBA as he does not have a consistent jumpshot yet. Ray Allen is both. Peja Stojakovich is a shooter.

I'll take a stab at it...

Re: 3 Pt Shootout Contestants Announced
I like the line-up. Kobe I think he is a great shooter, but he depends way too much on his legs and I think he will tire. Although, if he gets in a rhythm......Michael: Fredo, you're my older brother, and I love you. But don't ever take sides with anyone against the Family again. Ever. - The GodfatherComment

Re: 3 Pt Shootout Contestants Announced
They should put Shaq in the three point contest. That would be fun and it wouldn't be right not having him involved in All-Star Weekend.
...Or have another Barkley event this year. Last year, that was hilarious.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: 3 Pt Shootout Contestants Announced
I don't know what DCallAmerican is talking about. You can argue that Kobe is not a three point shooter, but to say he is not a shooter is insane. Watch a game and see how many mid-range jumpshots he hits.
Like Kashanova said though, Kobe is used to shooting over people and shooting contested shots, which is why I doubt he will do too good in the competition.
Maybe you are thinking about the difference between a set shooter slasher or something like that, or maybe you just have a different definition of a "shooter" than me.I love me some me....Comment

Re: 3 Pt Shootout Contestants Announced
If they wanted a star in there, it should be Dirk. Already won a Three Point Contest. MVP.
He's having a down year from behind the arc, but he's a better long range shooter than either Kobe, and definitley than RIP.Comment

DC, I see your point about Bryant maybe not belonging in the contest, but to say he isn't a shooter? You lost your mind for a second my man. That quote just about sums it up.Comment
