It was also shot selection. Look at where players get shots nowadays versus the old days. They used to run tight curl screens to get Larry Bird open J's from 15-18 feet out. Now everything is three point line and spread out.

I could go on and on about what has changed in the last 30 years but suffice to say there is far more coaching going on and lets face it coaches like defense more than offense!

SO in other words players scored more efficiently because they were smarter, not more athletic?

      Got it

Re: I really want to like basketball again

First off im a big basketball fan and think that the nba has been great ever since D-wade won the championship. That moment seems to have triggered a new golden age in the NBA.

You guys are getting on taylor34 for saying its to physical now, but i think you are misunderstanding some fo what he is saying.

He seems to hint that there is alot of pushing and stuff which doesnt make any sense to me, but i think he means something else which i agree with.

In basketball (and all levels of american sports in general) today scouts, coaches, and analysts care way to much about the "tale of the tape". They get excited about the potential of 6'9 240 pounder with a 50' vertical leap, but dont seem to worry about his lack of basketball knowledge.

If Jerry rice entered the NFL draft today do you think he would be a first round pick or would he have even gotten the oppurtunity to dominate like he did in college? They were hesitant to draft him in the first round in the 80s cause of his 4.71 40 time, i could only imagine how far he would have dropped today.

You think any coach would have made Bird the go to guy on an NCAA squad or any NBA team use a lottery pick on him?

Charles Barkely and Elgin Baylor would have had trouble making the highschool squad in some states today due to their physical limitations (both were 6-4 power forwards). Wouldnt matter how skilled they were.

The truth is that nowadays coaches and scouts will jst look you over and if you dont look like an athlete you might not get a shot to prove yourself.

Thts my main problem with the game today.

I would love to get back into the NBA. My problem with the game of today is I just don't see the players really caring to much. I remember back in the 80's and 90's after a game, you could easily tell which team won the game, and which team lost. The winning team was all smiles and high fiving, acting like little kids. The losers moped off the court, maybe threw a towel at the ground just for losing the game. Now, you can't really tell which team won or lost, they both just kinda man-hug their boys from the other team then chew gum while walking off the court. I just wanna see some passion, some team pride, see them actually enjoy the game their playing, not just punching a clock, then punching off the clock and going clubbin' like the rest of us. I'll give it another shot though.

The complaints people have are ridiculous. When players do celebrate people say that they're being childish or have no class, when they don't celebrate people say that they don't care. Just watch the games and stop complaining about every little thing.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Its a fact that the league average was higher than todays was, and all players had to know how to shoot.
I really want some explanation behind this statement
              Concrete evidence/videos please
