I was undecided but i think you make a great point. Because any position can be built around. If I'm in an expansion draft, I would take the best player and build around his game. I wouldn't turn down LeBron just so I could have a center or vice versa. I would pick whichever I thought was better, and then move on.

Re: What is the most important position on the floor?
I don't think there is an important position because if your good you can dominate at any position. What I always believed in was, how many 'game changers' you need to win the NBA championship. I think you need at least 2. BUT HERE IS THE IMPORTANT THING TO NOTE ABOUT THE 2 GAME CHANGERS: One has to be in the front court(SF,PF,C) and one has to be in the back court(PG,SG). It's not advisable to have the two in the same area of the court but sometimes it does work, i.e. 1999 Spurs(Duncan and Robinson).
But to sustain multiple championship runs, your going to need this formula to be successful. If you look at most of the NBA dynasties, they all follow this formula. 60's Celtics(Frontcourt-Russell,Backcourt-Cousy). 80's Lakers(Frontcourt-Jabbar,Backcourt-Johnson). 90's Bulls(Frontcourt-Pippen, Backcourt-Jordan). Early 2000's Lakers(Frontcourt-Shaq,Backcourt-Bryant). 2000's Spurs(Frontcourt-Duncan,Backcourt-Parker).
Rarely does an NBA champion not follow this formula. And when it doesn't, those teams that do win it never repeat.I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil. - Malcolm XComment

Matchups with the other team. Whoever the worst defender on the other team is at wing or post you abuse him with your best matchup. That is the post important position on the floor.Comment

Re: What is the most important position on the floor?
I still say that the dominant low post player can effect a game, in more ways then any other position on the floor.
Guys like Shaq, Hakeem and Duncan, in their primes, could absolutely train wreck a game.
Shaq, when he was motivated to play defense, made the game on both ends of the floor, just about impossible for teams.
If I had my choice of one type of player..Im taking the dominant big, who demands a double team.
Its the simplest route to building a playoff caliber team with a legitimate chance to contend deep into the post season, for 10-12 years(San Antonio Spurs)Last edited by sportyguyfl31; 10-14-2009, 12:36 PM.Comment

To me, position is more or less irrelevant. The most important position on the floor is where your best player is, or where you have the biggest mismatch.Comment

Re: What is the most important position on the floor?
You need two things, typically, to win it all in the NBA.
It starts with a strong, defensive center. The center is the "last line of defense" if a man gets beat off the dribble. Your center doesn't always have to be a shotblocker, but if they are consistently rotating to the right spot, your team defense is that much better.
On offense, you need a combination of a low-scoring threat and a creator at the wing. Look at the Lakers. 00'-03' they had Shaq and Kobe. 08' they have Pau Gasol and Kobe.
Of course there are many, many other factors, but if you can't defend the rim when people get beat off the dribble, you can't win in the NBA.-Jay Illestrate, Emcee/Producer/Graphic Artist

I would call the PG position the most importan with a team without a star. If you have a Kobe, Lebron, MJ, Shaq and all the obvious future HOF'ers it doesnt even matter.Comment
