But if they get out of shape...They arent following through with the contract...Not as if it will change the current contract...Just makes the player look like a pos money taker.Comment

Re: Why dont players improve over the offseason?
I actually thought of this thread while watching the game last night (patheric, I know.)
These guys make very difficult shot, look really easy.
Defenders in the NBA are so athletic, and long, a guy almost HAS to have a off the dribble, step back jumper..some kind of fallaway shot..something to get themselves some space from the contest.
These are really difficult shots. If we tried a off the dribble, step back 22 foot jumper in our everyday rec game, we'd miss the basket by 3 feet 9 out of 10 times...and our boys would give us hell.
These guys can drain them because their form hardly ever breaks down. That takes hours and hours of practice...these guys constantly repeat their shooting stroke..over and over again.Comment

Re: Why dont players improve over the offseason?
Donyell Marshall should've been at least as good as Cliff Robinson in the NBA, but he never made it to Cliffy's level in the pros. It's strange to me because they both pretty much had similar type of game as elite college players coming out of UConn. I guess that speaks to the difference in work ethic and luck/injuries between the players.

Some people do the things they need to do to be a better player. And then there is others that don't and fail in the game.Comment

Re: Why dont players improve over the offseason?
you need to have some talent in order to work and develop it, the most important after talent is focus and the greed to win. NBA is getting better the last couple of years some rivalries are back game has become more physical and intense. young players want to win...
it's difficult for a young guy working all year non stop he has 2 months to rest and all the money off the world to motivate himself to get better.
you got to be psychotic/obsessed with win like mike.Comment

Re: Why dont players improve over the offseason?
If you have athleticism, reaction time and IQ to do it. Monta Ellis improved his defense over the summer from what I've seen in past games. He's quick and has quick hands so that helps him a lot on-ball.. Now if we take a slower/less athletic player, then he'd have to improve in other areas of on-ball d, such as reaction time and IQ.09-10 The return of Run TMC: The Run EMC

Re: Why dont players improve over the offseason?
Most players establish habits and routines at a young age. It is hard to reteach players in one offseason to undo what they developed over 20+ years as a human being.
Most NBA players get much better as they get older at making open spot up shots....which is a big hurdle since in college or high school they likely had the ball in their hands all the time.Comment

Re: Why dont players improve over the offseason?
Thats a good one.
I think you can, just simply out of effort and mental toughness.
Look at how many people in the league, who are long limbed, and quick, that cannot defend worth a dang.
One guy who come to mind, who never had a reputation for defense, but is now at least, average is Ray Allen.
Paul Pierce is a guy who always had the potential to be a good defensive player, but often mailed it in, because of a combination of immaturity, caring more about scoring, and not being on teams where that was a mindset.
Now, he's pretty dang good.Comment
