My opinion probably counts for nothing since I'm from Boston, but I would put Larry in there over Magic...easily.Comment

I definitely wouldnt take Magic off that list. His accomplishments are crazy and if it wasn't for Larry Legend he'd have around 7 titles. You could probably same the same thing for Bird.
I don't like lists like this overall because everyone is always bias towards their generation and none of us have seen those guys play like we do post Magic/Bird. We're just going off stats from a league that was faltering back them trying to attract fans.Comment

Re: If you had to choose 5 names to argue for GOAT, it would be as follows...
This is a great list. If you look at these guys, these players revolutionized the game. There are many great players but these guys during their years took the game to another level.
Michael Jordan
Probably the first player to dominate the game from the 2-guard spot. There have been many great guards before him but they've never dominated the game like he did. When you think of the most dominate players of all time, you'd find a bunch of big men and then Jordan
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
The NBA's all-time leading scorer. And has held the record for 25 years. Amazing that he still hold the records with guys like Jordan, Karl Malone and Shaq played after him. Oh yeah, he's also the master of the most effective and famous post move, the sky hook.
Magic Johnson
The first 6'9" point guard. Who would have ever thought of putting a 6'9" player at the point? There has been a lot of players with about the same court vision as Magic BUT Magic was probably the first player to make winning look good and entertaining.
Wilt Chamberlain
The first DOMINATE big man in the league. I know there was George Mikan and he was a dominate(notice the caps) big man for his time. But Wilt was the first DOMINATE big man. And DOMINATE on both ends of the court. He was also the first big man to make passing fashionable amongst big men.
Bill Russell
The ultimate winner. The first guy to make defense into an art form. Russell was so skilled at the shot block and intimidation that most of his blocks resulted in fast breaks for his team. His philosophy was not to waste a block BUT to make the block into an opportunity for his teams offense. I wonder why shot blockers of today don't take that same approach?
To me, it would be hard to replace anybody on this list.Last edited by Dice; 06-15-2009, 10:00 PM.I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil. - Malcolm XComment

I can't make an argument for any of the other four over Jordan. I guess I can thank them for paving the way for him though.PS: You guys are great.

There is a great book out that addresses this very question by Elliot Kalb. Don't know if any of you have read it, if not do so. I bought it when I was in Japan of all places. Here is a link to it.

He has a real surprise as the G.O.A.T. but after I read his arguments he makes a real strong case. Here is a hint, it's not MJ, and he is also not on the top list from the OP. (Although that is a great list also.) It is a few years old now, I wish that he would do a revised version.Comment

I'm probably the only one here who wouldn't consider Kareem as a top-5 guy. In the 10-best...probably. I'll surprise you and say that I take Kobe before Kareem (not to my team, just for the list...LOL).My Specs:

CPU: Z80 @ 3.5 MHz
GPU: Monochrome display

Re: There are really only 5 players you can argue for GOAT...
Michael Jordan is the G.O.A.T. because he played both ends of the floor consistently. He won with a surrounding cast that consisted of players like Stacey King, Brad Sellers, Dickie Simpkins, etc. He played in an era of where there was no hand check rule. If teams couldn't stop Jordan they would literally beat the hell out of the man. Just take a look at the Detroit Pistons of that time who invented the "Jordan Rules". That meant when in doubt knock MJ out! Even the New York Knicks of the nineties acquired that particular style of play to try and stop Jordan. If you tried doing that to any of these stars today you'll probably get suspended a whole season or worse kicked out of the league! Jordan is the best hands down! He and his team are undefeated in the NBA Finals. More than I can say for the rest of the so called candidates.Comment

Re: There are really only 5 players you can argue for GOAT...
I dont have a problem with Kareem being on that list and I dont have a problem with Magic being on that list, but does anyone have a problem with Magic AND Kareem being on that list?
You could always say, yeah Magic won because he had Kareem and vice versa, since they played on the same team. I guess for me, the tie breaker would be that when Kareem went down, Magic stepped into the post and scored 40 something points to win the clinching game as a rookie. Plus, they made the finals when Magic was an old man in 1991 without Kareem.
I guess if theres someone Id drop from the list, it would be Kareem. If I were to replace him it would be either with Bird or Oscar.Comment
