Dammit Xcell, don't be giving away my secret like that

But nah Capone, I think it would fit moreso with Bad Shot Selection than Good Shot Selection. I say that because people will know the players that will try to find other ways to score and/or contribute and the guys who will keep jacking up shots regardless of where it's from on the floor..

    Good thread BTW

Both ways... if it results in a turnover, then it's like a forced turnover (or as I call it, steal assist). Otherwise, even if it doesn't result in a turnover, it uses clock and disrupts the offense's possession. Obviously the former is more important to the bottom line than the latter.

Regarding controlled taps, that does show up in total rebounds, but I'm unaware which player gets credit on the individual box score. If Fabricio Oberto (master tipper) taps the ball back to Tony Parker, I believe the rebound goes to Tony Parker. If it does, in fact, get credited to Oberto, then ignore what I said about it. Does anyone know for certain?

hmmm i never that about who gets credit for those types of rebounds... but i'll be adding the tipped balls to my website too... it is pretty important... by the way if any of you watch EVERY game for any certain team and wouldn't mind tracking that team's star player pm me, i need more people... it would be nice to be able to keep track for all 30 teams best players, but right now only like 5 will be tracked... still close to two months before the season starts and my website has only been in production for two weeks so I should be able to at least get close to getting all the top players tracked...

It is all to the discretion of the stat keeper. As the one article floating around has pointed out there isn't much set in stone for stats.

I remember watching Kenny Anderson (my favorite player all time) not get stats for deflecting passes that led to a steal and wondering why they always gave it to Pierce or Walker. There is no rhyme or reason just the stat keepers discretion.

There is no way to accurately judge good/bad shot selection. It's not something tangible that you can measure like a tipped pass. There are too many factors that weigh into it. Por ejemplo:
            • Score
            • Time on shot clock
            • Distance
            • Player skill set
            • Contested vs Being Open
            • Who it's contested by

It seems easy to say "that was a bad shot" but in order for the stat to have consistency you would need to factor in those measurables and much more meaning that you would have to do a lot of research on a good amount of shots.

I like the idea in principle but I think the reason that a lot of these stats aren't kept is because they're too hard to measure consistently.

well you just listed the main factors that need to be considered... as long as you have the factors that need to be consider then it can be measured...

I only listed what I could off the top of my head. It's still too hard to measure with all of those metrics I listed because they have to be broken down too.

                  For example:

What distance from the defender determines being open or contested?
How do you measure than in a fast moving game?

I like your idea in theory but measuring it is too open to subjectivity.

I agree. It seems like it needs to be measured either by the same person or on the same scale. I'm a tough grader, but someone else may not be as tough. That would lead to more "good shots" and fewer "bad shots" lest all were done by the same person.
