LeBron unhappy with new Bench rules

LeBron James isn't a fan of the NBA's new rules governing player's actions while on the bench.

The NBA has issued a memo to its teams directing players on the bench to remain seated during games, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Referees will be keeping a closer eye on benches and it's possible that technical fouls could be issued if warnings aren't enough.

The Cavaliers and Celtics have been known to stand as a sign of team unity during intense moments, but the gesture has often blocked the view of fans.

"It is hard to take that out of the game," James said. "Part of the game is emotions, your teammates are all you have. That was part of the reason we played great basketball, because we cheered each other."

I agree with him. This is the most absurd **** I have ever seen. I don't get why they are always looking to change rules that have had almost zero affect on anyone for decades.

Well the people having their view obstructed by the standing players paid good money to sit there. And it's in the most intense and crucial moments that the players stand up. I would want to be able to see what's going on if I'm sitting there.

        "The players don't care!"

The players start showing emotion and standing an cheering for their team.

"Make them sit down, I cannot see!"

STFU Rich people and let the damn entertainment do whatever the hell they want! Maybe if you actually knew what basketball was, you wouldn't be sitting behind the ******* bench you morons!

        Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I see this sparking controversy in the future, when the season actually starts. When the game is down to the wire and players jump up in celebration only to get hit with a T. Dumb rule.

Well Mo, it doesn't have an effect on the game but it has an effect on the fans that pay a lot of cash to sit closer to the action. If you are 5 foot something and are trying to see over cats that are 6-8 plus and standing the whole game that is a problem. That person then has to stand up which may then obscure the vision of the person behind them, etc. , etc.

If it's the closing seconds of a close ball game I think the NBA needs to lay off that rule as most fans stand during this time anyway. If it's early in the ball game though they need to sit down imo.
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

This is a great rule. The fans who pay most of the player's salaries should always come first.

I understand that most of us (myself included) have never dealt with this problem because we have never sat courtside, but we should still be thinking about those who have. They pay good money to watch too.

Re: LeBron unhappy with new Bench rules

If you've ever been part of a team where you were in a situation that had your emotions going through the roof, you would know it's almost impossible to refrain from standing up when your team does something huge or hits a clutch shot. It's the same adrenaline that drives you after a buzzer-beating shot or a game-winning block. Being strapped down to your seat doesn't seem like something that will work because it's only natural we let out our emotions when our mind and body tell us to.

Yeah, people pay good money to sit in those seats, but they also get to be RIGHT next to the players, and sometimes get to talk to them. If you want to see the game, you normally don't sit there. I don't know when basketball became a sport, but I know since it's glory days we haven't heard much complaining like this.

The underlying premise of this "rule" is garbage.

how about fining the fans who stand up and obstruct the view of the other fans behind them?

If the players get fined for being excited at a basketball game and standing up i will be extremly pissed...that just sucks all the joy out of the game.

One of my favorite things to do is look at the bench when something amazing happens and ee thier reaction...

The fans behind them can stand up.

Horrible rule but I agree with Matrix in that there's no way this gets enforced. Remember when Stern said he would start fining and/or suspending players for flopping? Yeaaaaaa how's that gone so far?

Well they did go through that "talk back to the ref and you'll get a tech" rule.. they enforced that pretty tight.

I could see this going either way.

The flopping rule is pretty different than this.
