This just gets the NBA in the newspaper. They do this every year. Some hokey rule change that gets sports radio shows talking.Comment

Re: LeBron unhappy with new Bench rules
IMO, if it's a situation in the game where the players are standing, it must be an important phase of the match, therefore if you're a good fan you and most of the rest of the crowd should be standing as well.
at least that's my theory...make sense?Comment

Re: LeBron unhappy with new Bench rules
There's no way that it will be enforced in a true "emotion" part of the game, i.e. the closing quarter. People are complaining about buzzer-beaters and stuff, but no way would that ever be an issue. The game takes precedence. Also, for people crying about "real fans" and "rich seats," a lot of working-class people save up for a long time to be able to sit behind the benches, and whether its working class people or rich folk, their ability to pay and watch the game is just as valuable to the organization (if not moreso) than "real fans" sitting in the 400s. (Also, most have kids. Just sayin'.)
So, let's take a look at some points where players stand:
4%: Until their team scores
Sit down, unless the fans also stand until the team scores. Nothing says "team unity" like a compulsory exercise in bench-standing that, I guarantee, the players disdain.
23%: When whining to the refs
Slap a tech on them. Standing from the bench and jawing at the refs is a terrible idea.
51%: To congratulate a teammate leaving the game
Probably a dead ball or inbounds pass to the first 5 seconds of the shot clock... not going to miss much.
10%: To engage in some sort of over-the-top tomfoolery, such as taunting the opponents bench or doing some choreographed excitement for when someone does something relatively routine
Sit down and stop acting like clowns. Fine them money and man-points if they obstruct views.
12%: To legitimately show excitement during crucial points in the game, namely the closing minutes
If it's that exciting, the real fans will stand or do whatever they have to to be able to see... if they don't, it doesn't matter.Last edited by Shinyhubcaps; 10-07-2009, 02:53 AM.Comment

Re: LeBron unhappy with new Bench rules
I feel that most people who buy tickets right behind the bench get those seats so they can talk to the players, take pictures, and maybe hear what really goes on in a huddle during a timeout.
If seeing the action on the court from great seats is that important then why not sit behind the broadcasters or within the first 4 rows across from the bench.Comment

Re: LeBron unhappy with new Bench rules
This is absolutely absurd. I guess if you hit a shot in game 7 of the NBA finals with .1 seconds left to go up by one...T em up! Tie game.
This is gonna be very annoying. NBA make a rule that NBA fan seats have to be pushed back or something.Comment

Re: LeBron unhappy with new Bench rules
The underlying premise of this "rule" is garbage.
how about fining the fans who stand up and obstruct the view of the other fans behind them?
If the players get fined for being excited at a basketball game and standing up i will be extremly pissed...that just sucks all the joy out of the game.
One of my favorite things to do is look at the bench when something amazing happens and ee thier reaction...
I think the NBA should see to it that the fans have a way to see. Take out the seats right behind the bench or find a way to elevate that section.Comment

Re: LeBron unhappy with new Bench rules
The other significant rule change announced Wednesday by the league, according to the memo obtained by ESPN.com, is aimed at cutting down on the growing frequency of players standing while they're on the bench.
Starting this season, league rules dictate that players will be required to remain seated on the bench while the ball is live except to "spontaneously react to a notable play [and] immediately sitting down on the bench afterward" or "to approach the scorer's table to report into the game."
The memo states that "players will not be permitted to stand [in front of] the bench at any other time while the ball is in play, including standing for the last minute of a game or standing until the team scores its first point in game."Rose City 'Til I Die

Re: LeBron unhappy with new Bench rules
Still though.
The very creation of the rule is unnecessary, and will only lead to problems. I'm sure there are a number of solutions to the problem without such a rule.
Plus there are a handful of teams that have their benches stand until they score their first point.Comment

Well, that tradition is going to have to die. It's not like people can't find out other things to do. They could do jazz hands until there's a point. They can stomp on the floor until there's a point. They'll adapt.Rose City 'Til I Die

Re: LeBron unhappy with new Bench rules
"A notable play, then immediately sit down" all I see is problems with that vague language. A notable play could occur quite frequently over the duration of a game and how fast is immediately?
There's going to be problems bottom line, I'm sure there's ways to solve this issue without making this rule.Comment

Re: LeBron unhappy with new Bench rules
It's not that big of a deal the NBA doesn't want the players standing for minutes at a time, that's all it really isComment
