Jerry West is a fan of contraction

I was a little bit surprised when Chuck was on PTI yesterday and he agreed with West. He feels bad for fans that pay to watch crap. He said the overall talent level isn't good in the NBA right now.

Now of course this is something the Player's Union would oppose. I wonder if the Owners would threaten the Union with contraction if they don't get what they want for the next CBA. I've heard at least half of the teams are losing money.

Nothing new, expansion killed all three of the major sports in this country. Glad some people are speaking up about it though.

I don't mind this amount of teams...

But I freaking HATE this amount of games.........!

Honestly, 30% of games the players don't even care.

Look at the Miami game the other night...they got rolled over in the first quarter and basically conceded defeat at that point (losing 104 to 65 or something)

Too many teams go into games thinking "it's okay if we lose this one...keep the guys fresh for thursday night".

As a fan, some games are painfully boring.

The NBA regular season is even more useless/boring than the college basketball regular season. With 16 teams making the playoffs every possible contender/champion is guaranteed to be in the post season plus with older guys in the league and a longer season guys don't go 100% every game and teams "keep guys fresh" as you mentioned. At least in college the kids are going balls to the wall every game. Contract four pro teams and cut the number of playoff teams from from 16 to 8 and I'd be ecstatic.

Honestly, unless your an absolute basketball fanatic there is pretty much no reason to watch more than 40 regular season games (excluding your favorite team).

                Uh no thank you.

NBA players continue to get better. The game continues to evolve.

Just because NBA players are better doesn't mean the talent pool is larger. So by "evolving" are you hoping there are fifty NBA teams in the future?

I would like just a smaller season. It is just too awful to take teams away from faithful fans. Look at Seattle, that is just unfair. I love the NFL with almost every game mattering. I'd say like a 29 game season or maybe 58 would be awesome. I love the NBA at the start and finished but I just get kind of bored in the middle. Never happens with College Bball and NFL for me. Definitiely happens in MLB though. I think I watched the first five games on TV, then watched all my Met games on TV, and after that stay cleared until the playoffs. Basically I watched like 12 games. Shorter Seasons!!!
I will always, always be a Jets fan. But trust me it hurts.

Faithful fans? The Heat can barely get half the seats full at their home games and they have one of the best five players on the planet.

I didn't mean like that, it's still all relative even when talking about different countries/continents though.

25 million dollars per season to play 29 games? The public wouldnt stand for it. If you reduce the games you have to reduce salaries because you cant possibly justify a guy getting almost a million per game. A shorter season will never ever happen in any sport because of the loss in revenue and if anything they'll go to an 84 game season.

Re: Jerry West is a fan of contraction

My feeling on expansion/contraction is this. Lets say there are 24 nba teams like there used to be, 24x15= 360 players ;going to 30 teams results in an additional 90 players needed. My belief is if the international/ additional american players that could have played in the previous 24 team league if given the chances is 90 or more than you can expand because theoretically you are not diluting talent.

Now what that doesnt factored in is how many more elite type players are being produced from that international/additional american pool of players. So I am really in the middle of this expansion/contraction argument, I can see the benefits of both.

Yes. I would love to see a world wide league. I would love to see a European division. Etc...

To say that the talent pool hasn't increased....well you might want to look at the influx of players from across the world, countries that were not playing high level basketball 20 years ago.

This isn't football american. Basketball is a worldwide game.
