This statement is complete B.S. The idea of Howard "going downhill" at 24 is laughable.

He's the best rebounder and arguably the most impactful defensive presense in the NBA. When you take that into consideration, "only" scoring 18 PPG is a pretty nice problem to have.

With his outstanding FG% and ability to put opponents in foul trouble, Dwight's offense is more than enough to balance out what he does on the defensive end of the floor. He individually affects the game more than anyone else on the defensive end by a long shot. He blocks shots, alters shots, creates fouls and finishes defensive plays by rebounding at the very highest level. His team is stacked with offensive talent, but Dwight makes the most of the few touches he gets.

No question, he needs to continue to grow to reach his personal potential, but if you look at both ends of the floor, Dwight impacts the game as much as anyone.
Agreed on everything you said. I just don't think he deserves the "superstar" status. I'd take 'Zo in his prime over Howard.

        Re: Dwight Howard

All jokes aside the Magic should be doing a better job getting him the ball more often. He has the physical tools to be a complete beast on the low blocks and there is no way he should be that far below to top shot taker on the team let alone 4th.

Honestly i think sometime Dwight is too nice a guy for his own good. He should be demanding the ball more often and should be commanding double teams everytime down the court. If he looked for his shot more teams would have to send help more often then you surround him with Lewis, Petris, Reddick, Nelson, Anderson etc who are all top class perimeter shooters they would be nearly unstoppable.

He's still awesome and the best defender / rebounding big in the entire league but he needs to be more assertive on offense for his own good and the good of the team.

          Re: Dwight Howard

I think Dwight just needs to keep the ball higher when he has it, so he can't get stripped as easily. My memories of the Finals from last year were of him keeping it too low and getting the ball stripped; plus like others have said he needs to figure out how to shoot fouls better even if it means shooting them one handed or by doing his Hank Gathers impression and shooting left handed. If I am going to run my offense through a center in the 4th quarter; I prefer the center to be able to shoot fouls. Its why I feel more comfortable running my offense through a healthy Yao in the 4th over Dwight.

totally agree with you. but since the all-star break he has been playing much better.

last night Barkley spoke to how he pulled Dwight aside and talk to him about demanding the ball from his teammates even if u have to shout and his reply was " but i dont want to yell at my teammates." WTF! well obviously he didnt have to yell cuz he is getting the ball a little more.

still though, at one point or another he gonna have come off the "niceness" stuff.

and not only does he lead his team in rebounds, FG% and blocks, he also leads them in steals!

Or maybe the perception of Howard needs to be changed: Not a dominant centre, but a legitimate centre with great defense and athleticism.

It's not Dwight, its the system he's in. His team takes the most 3's in the league...that shoud tell you there....they dont use him in the post nearly enough. Even with that, he STILL leads the league in FT atempts right? If you had a more conventional system....nelson, carter, lewis, bass and howard...id wager youd see his production sky rocket..

If this is the case, then Stan Van Gundy must be the most moronic coach ever. To not use his dominant center to the fullest?

I'm sorry, but there is a reason he isn't fed the ball more. The excuses are piling up.

Dwight should faceup more. He's quicker than most other centers and could get to the basket at will. His back to the basket game is lacking, and doesn't help Pat "I'mma shoot the J" Ewing is his coach.
Still though, he's young and could easily develop the footwork and back to the basket moves.

Stan Van Gundy is NOT a good coach.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"
