        Not surprised at all.

I agree with what's been said - the NBA's not what it used to be since the 70s/80s/early to mid 90s. I miss the rivalries and the genuine hate teams had for each other. I didn't get any better than Knicks-Bullets back in Clyde's time, Dr.J's Sixers vs. Bird's Celtics and of course, Celtics vs. the Bad Boy Pistons. That was downright nasty - an old-fashioned blood feud.

While watching this documentary I was grinning from ear to ear seeing all those hard fouls committed whenever anyone drove to the basket. That was intimidation at its finest. During those days, being a good slasher or willing to mix it up inside the paint for rebounds as a player is what separated the men from the boys. Great stuff.

Bring back the old NBA where it was a mans game. No ejections, no flagrant foul crap. just good ole fashion toughness. The players policed themselves.

You got people crying murder over a play like Pau's "flagrant" foul on Lou Almondson in the game day thread a couple posts down.. those same people would probably drop dead from a heart attack if it went back to the olden days.

I can't believe how sensitive fans have gotten over fouls.

If there were some semblance of consistency in regards to what constituted a flagrant foul, then that would be a great starting point. It seems that some teams have longer leashes than others do in terms of "physical" play.

With that said, PHX should have done something to retaliate, so they are part of the problem. Sad, that the coach was the only one who seemed irate.

Nice veiled reference to me. So transparent.

I would actually welcome a change to the old days. It's not a matter of the fouls, it's a matter of the consistency. Trust me, there's nothing more I'd love to see than one of my players foul the living **** out of one of your players, or some punks on the Spurs. But nowadays, things like that can happen to the Suns players and, like Friday night showed, nothing will come of it. Let's draw the battle lines so people know what can and can't happen.

There was more than one person crying in that thread over nothing more than a hard foul.

Lou came out after the game and said the same exact thing. Nice of him to man up about that.

Transparency is something you should be familiar with.

Stern takes credit for cleaning up the NBA but the bar was set pretty low to begin with. The Larry O'Brien era was absolute anarchy on a nightly basis. How would the Tree Rollins saga play out 30 years later & a 24 hour new cycle? For those who dont remember:

                            From Johnny Most autobiography

Most: I remember the night M.L. [Carr] challenged Atlanta’s seven-foot center, Tree Rollins, to a fight during the game and then waited for a half-hour after the game in the hallway to challenge him again. (Rollins claimed M.L. was brandishing a straight razor; M.L. told me he was merely holding a set of car keys.)

According to the NY Times (April 2, 1982), Tree reported the razor incident to the NBA office; Carr received a letter of reprimand from the league. Tree, unhappy with the league’s handling of the incident, filed suit in Atlanta Superior Court charging Carr with “verbally” and “physically” abusing him during some 40 NBA games. The suit, which named the Celtics and Carr, sought:
. . . a total of $4 million dollars in damages. Steve Kauffman, Rollins agent, said the league investigated Rollins’s charges but, because of conflicting opinions on whether Carr had a weapon during the incident, decided not to pursue the matter. Red Auerbach called the suit “one of the most ludicrous things in the history of sports.” (Source: The New York Times, July 20, 1982)

Earlier that same year, Tree and two Philadelphia 76ers, guard Lionel Hollins and center Darryl Dawkins:
. . . were fined $5,500 by the National Basketball Association for excessive violence in the first-round playoff game between the teams last Friday in Atlanta. Rollins drew the largest fine, $2,500, for his third elbowing infraction of the season. Hollins was fined $2,000 for punching Rollins in the head as retaliation. Rollins was restrained by other players from continuing the scuffle. (Source: The New York Times April 28, 1982)

Can't believe how fat Anthony Mason became. He was as jacked up as anyone in the NBA in the 90's.
This. The hand check rule and the 3 sec rule have killed the physical game and weighted the game so much in offense's favor. That's why guys like Kobe and LeBron and Wade can drive the lane at will, while MJ and co had to work to get theirs.
