Why are people using rings as a measure to Kobe surpassing MJ?

Russell has 11 rings and not many people say he's better than MJ, so people thinking Kobe getting 6+ rings could get him looked at as "better than Jordan" confuses me.

      I don't think they are.

They're clearly saying it depends on how Kob looks in the future.

I really think if they do that Bosh sign and trade, you can tack on an extra 2-3 years. He may score less, but he will likely be more efficient.
Way overblown people think that way is because he doesn't dunk on guys anymore, but in reality no guard can stay in front of him.

let's say he plays 5 more years. and wins the title this year, next year, and 1 more somewhere in there, giving him 7. and let's say he surpasses Jordan in every statistical category that he can (points, playoff points, finals points, playoff wins, etc.).

do you think people would consider him greater than Jordan if he took 18 or 19 seasons to do what Jordan did in 13 in Chicago?
(I for one, wouldn't. I would figure that if you play more years, you better rack up better stats than someone else) and as far as the titles go, say he wins this year and next year, giving him 6, I wouldn't consider him equal to Jordan, even though he would have the same number of rings because it will have taken him longer than it took Jordan, and he would've done it in 8 chances, as opposed to Jordan's 6.

but that said, I still think he only has 2 seasons left as an elite player, and I think he'll only play for 4 or 5 more seasons.

Yes, but he came into the league at 18 and has a ton of mileage. Olympics, deep Playoff runs year in and year out, etc. You can already see it taking a toll on his body. I say he's got 3 years left as an elite player.

Probably 2-3 years as an an elite player, which I assume is what he is now. But Kobe is one of these guys that can still score 20 ppg when they're 37.

The "coming into the league at 18" is overblown.

That would work for someone like Lebron who was averaging forty minutes a game as a rookie and led the league in minutes his second year but Kobe averaged 15 and 26 minutes his first two years and his third was the shortened season.

He also had a pretty clear break in the middle of his career when they weren't doing anything in the playoffs.

                        Maybe.

But there are a number players who get just as much calls or more than Bryant.

                        Durant, LBJ, Wade to start.

That's the other crown no one is ever taking from MJ. He was ridiculous with the fouls he got.

I think LeBron pushes it to another level.

I've seen him seek out people and run into the them, and then throw up a shot, and get a call.

He already shows signs of slippage..the amount of difficult shots he has to convert, to get his points has grown, over the past 3 years.

He's the best 'tough shot' maker I have ever seen though, and he has tremendous savy, footwork and competitive 'I want this' to convert them or draw fouls.

I give him another year at this level, maybe 2, followed by a gradual Vince Carter like erosion.

We haev to remember that he has played A LOT more NBA basketball then your normal 31 year old vet.

His game isn't based on athleticism anymore like VC not to mention his skill set trumps VC in every facet of the game (not a knock on VC).
