Cavaliers to hire Byron Scott as HC? Updated Pg 6

With or without LeBron James, Brian Shaw will coach the Cleveland Cavaliers.

A source told FanHouse the Lakers assistant is finalizing a deal to join the Cavaliers just one day before James' much-anticipated free agency begins. Shaw was a finalist with former New Orleans and New Jersey coach Byron Scott after Michigan State coach Tom Izzo declined the team's offer earlier this month.

    More to come...

    Thank God! No Byron Scott!

I wonder if he's going to have them run the Triangle no matter what. If so, I definitely want to see Lebron go back just to see how he handles being in such a structured offense.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

Either way I just don't like seeing assistants move on.

I felt the same way when Rambis left for Minny.

I thought Rambis would fail in Minny, but not sure how I feel about Shaw.

Supposedly he told Grant and Gilbert that he is going to focus on two things:

              Defense
              Running the Triangle.

Does anyone else feel this signing lacks the luster that was needed to lure Bron back to Cleveland?? I mean I'm not discrediting Brian Shaw's ability or knowledge of basketball, but no head coaching experience? No proven winner? Yeah he was under Jackson, but really at this point means nothing other than what offense he will probably want to run. Didn't LeBron say he wanted to see what the Cleveland front office did with the coaching vacancy to see where they wanted to go?

This signing doesn't scream, "Let's win 'Ships together"...

Brian Shaw was the best candidate available. Byron Scott doesn't scream "Let's win 'Ships together" either.

I never said he did, but the guy has won in the NBA and has turned teams around, but I imagine that if CLE offered him a deal he would of rejected it with no sure thing on LeBron returning...

I just can't grasp the fact the your best candidate available is a guy who has never even coached an NBA game, just seems like this was a last ditch effort to have someone in place before the FA period begins...

Granted he doesn't have any championship wns but Scott turned around the Nets and took them to two Finals appearances. Brian Shaw hardly compares.

Look, how many elite coaches are there in the NBA? 5? How many coaches have won a championship in the past 20 years?

Scott may win a few more games this year, but the guy is not an elite coach. I have posted my thoughts on him several times, he's just not that good of a coach. He also has a winning % under .500 and loses his players quickly. He does not work hard *rumors that he skipped practice in NJ to go play golf during the Finals* and does not watch game tape.

So what I'm saying is: If you're not going to get Pop, Doc, Phil, Larry Brown or Pat Riley, you're better off finding someone who hasn't failed in the NBA twice with some of the best PG's to ever play the game.

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I believe his W/L total is a little misleading seeing he had to turn around two very bad teams when he got there in the Hornets and Nets. And even then, he is only 3 games under .500 overall.

I really don't know how you can say he didn't work hard or didn't watch game tape unless you were there accompanying him in those tasks but I would have to guess that if you're a coach in the NBA and lead your team to back-to-back finals, then I imagine you would be doing quite a bit of work and studying. Those things don't just happen by chance.

I tend to agree with both of you.

Overall I don't see either option [Scott or Shaw] as being a "bad" decision at this point in time.
