OK, let me say first off I am a Melo fan. I grew up just outside Syracuse and will always have fond memories of him leading SU to the National Championship in 2003. When he was drafted by Denver, that became my new NBA team, after having followed the Lakers during the Magic-era. Ironically, I moved to Denver towards the end of Melo's rookie year, so over the last 7 years, I've had the opportunity to see him in person numerous times. I love his game, although there are times he drives you nuts with his lack of defensive intensity.

I have no beef with him wanting to go to New York. He's an East Coast guy and he is right in questioning the future of the Nuggets franchise. After overpaying for guys like Kenyon Martin, who are now on the tail end of their careers, Denver wasn't going to be a title contender and it appeared a rebuilding project, centered around Ty Lawson-Melo-Nene was Denver's plan. If I were Melo, that wouldn't get me too excited.

So, I don't fault him at all for leaving. I hope he does well in NY.

Altimus, you bring up a good point about how if Denver let Melo play out the year and then sign with NY, they would get nothing. I've heard people say, 'well, they would get $15-20 of cap space to use to sign other players.' Really? How did that work out for Cleveland and Toronto last year when LeBron and Bosh went to Miami? Those teams found themselves without those big contracts and who did they sign in free agency? Unless you have pieces in place, you are not going to attract A-list free agents. What you wind up with are second-tier guys who are just happy to get extra PT thanks to said superstar moving on to another city.

Denver really had to try and get something for Melo and I think this trade was the best one they could've made. Chandler and Gallinari are real nice pickups and the draft picks (hopefully) work out down the line. Felton is a downgrade from Billups in the sense that Chauncey was a real mentor to Lawson and I don't see Felton playing that role, but he will be serviceable and this will just speed up Lawson's move into the starting lineup.

Lawson-Afflalo-Gallinari-Chandler-Nene isn't a bad Starting 5 and with Birdman, JR Smith, Kenyon Martin and Al Harrington coming off the bench, still not bad.

I'm just glad we can all move on from this.

The biggest critique all season in NY of Felton is his passing. Giving the ball to Amare 40' from the hoop which always leads to a turnover, missing guys all day in the PnR, poor decisions in the PnR. Billups isn't amazing either but Felton makes a lot of poor mistakes.
        Neither is Steve Nash.

Felton is still by far the better, and younger player. And now you have no PG for the foreseeable future.

THANK YOU BASED GOD this whole thing is over. Also good Job Russian convincing the Knicks they had to give up all that for Melo.

I do feel bad for Dolan. IMO with all this reporting it looks like he was basically backdoored into this trade for all intents and purposes.

Like the move of getting Brewer. He and Fields will be a really nice combo at the 2 for them in the future.

The Knicks never had one. Felton was signed specifically as a stop gap to a dream. He knew that. The Knicks were not going to keep him.

There was no guarantee Melo was coming to NY as a free agent. We learned that lesson already.

Denver's #1 motivation all year was not to end up like Cleveland or Toronto. As long as they could get something, I don't think they would have held on to him. At the very least we could have pushed it to the deadline.

Melo does not compare to the FA's last summer. No one knew what Lebron was thinking. We were just one of 5 teams in the running. This summer we would not be competing against a bunch of other good destinations with cap space, and we know that Melo's #1 choice is New York.

Sooooooo how long before Stan Kroenke fires off the scathing letter to Carmelo declaring that the Nuggets will win a championship before the Knicks?

Re: Carmelo Anthony Traded To New York

                          My take:

Melo is not without his flaws but NY was a .500 team looking at an opportunity to add a top 25 (opinion) player. They had to pull the trigger. I also think the constant speculation caused people to overrate Galinari, Chandler. These guys were role players on a .500 basketball team. Nothing more. Felton hurts but I think the Knicks simply said it's easier to find another Felton then another Carmello. We also can't underestimate how much better D'antoni's system can make some players look than they actually are. Quentin Richardson and Boris Diaw are still cashing checks from their time with him.

The Knick's can't win a title with just Amare and Melo. But let's be real here. They were a .500 team to begin with and trending downward. Now they got two top 25 players and we'll see where they can go from here.

Felton went from being garbage during his Charlotte tenure to an after thought in the FA class last summer, to a bad signing by the Knicks to a "far better player" than Billups in a six month stretch? Amazing.

We'll worry about our PG situation in the future, we were never competing for a title this year anyway.

I thought it was was. Either Carmelo loses money or Denver loses assets while doing a S&T later down the line. But you don't gut your team. Oh well.
