You guys need to stop insulting each other's intelligence. Now.

Discuss it calmly or its locked and people are getting tossed. Let's not start off basketball season on the wrong foot.

Do you think there should be two categories of who can be considered best from deep-mid range, then? One for players who can create really well (ie Rondo) and one for players who are very efficient scoring from there (ie Dirk)? This is a serious question.

I've already made my opinion clear. I think that moves and ability to get a clean look are important, but ultimately, you've gotta make the shot. Iverson is a great example. He had the quickness, handles, determination, and heart to get open in deep-mid range on anybody. However, he was horrendously inefficient from that range (around 37%). IMO, I can't say he had great mid-range game because the most important part of the game is putting the ball in the basket.

Don't you think AI deserves to be on that list too? his shot % doesn't reflect it, but he is usually the smallest guy on the court shooting over everyone else who is at least 6in bigger than him at the 2. In space midrange he is usually money.

Kobe is usually shooting over double and triple teams in some cases, also not reflected in his shot percentage, and regardless, who on that list is taking your last shot, from mid-range, with the game on the line for the win in the big game?

I'm still taking Kobe, but Durant because of his athleticism and his performance for "REDEEM TEAM" is a close second.

no iverson doesn't belong. He wasn't any bit a shooter, he was solely a scorer, and there is a difference

KOBE'S first game he was guarded by Battier (possibly the best perimeter defender in the league) most of the game which explains his 2-7 performance.

For a reason I can't figure out, KD couldn't get it going from there even though Deng was guarding him and he had several good looks.

I'm expecting both players to score more effectively from there this year than in years past.

Weird thread. I'll make it simple..

Break it down into 2 different categories...

A mid range game like Rip Hamiliton who comes off screens

                and

A mid range game like Kobe who is iso'd and posts up

To answer the question..I take Dirk

Kobe usually isn't going to post in that range, it's gonna be within 15 feet of the basket. We're talking about 16-23 feet. Most shots from that range will be jumpers of some kind.

Since the season has started, I'm gonna try to break it down based off the games I see. I know I won't be able to watch every game (I get TNT, ESPN, NBAHD), but the games I do see I'm gonna try to break down.

That being said, I have been thinking about changing the thread title because it is hard to quantify "Best Deep-Mid Range Game". I think Deep-Mid Range Efficiency is better, but I'm still not sold on it.

Some of the criteria can include

                  1. How consistent are they
                  2. How do they play on the back end of the second game in a row
                  3. Do they usually come off screens or shoot behind picks
                  4. Was the shot in an ISO situation
                  5. Who is defending them
                  6. Are they being doubled
                  7. Do they have an injury that is affecting their efficiency
                  8. Are they a number 1 option or a role player
                  9. Did they force the shot
                  10. What was the degree of difficulty
                  11. Was the shot at the end of the shot or game clock

Last night I got to watch the Bulls vs. Thunder and Clippers vs. Blazers (And part of the Heat vs. 76ers and the fourth quarter of the Celtics vs. Cavs). Brandon Roy looked really good from that distance. It didn't matter if he was coming off a pick or screen, was in an ISO situation, if it was at the end of the shot clock or at the end of the game clock. He seemed to hit more than he missed. After looking at the box score, he was 5-9 from that range, which is outstanding.

Durant was the opposite. He was getting to the rim, hitting his free throws, and scoring in transition well. Most of his deep-mid range attempts were after he caught a pass, set his feet, had a little separation from Deng, and took the shot. Deng had to respect the drive and was sagging off a little bit on most shots. For an elite deep-mid range shooter, those are good shots to have, especially when you have 3 or 4 inches of height and some separation on your defender. For some reason, those shots weren't falling last night for KD, as he was 2-7. I'm not sure why.

This is the type of analysis that will help determine who is efficient from that range or not. If anybody else wants to add to this or break down a different game you saw, feel free. I'm gonna either watch the games on TNT tonight or DVR them and watch them later. Between Washington and Orlando and Phoenix and Utah, I'm gonna be watching Arenas, Wall, Hinrich, Vince, Jameer, and Derron Williams the most. Not sure if I'm missing anybody.

If anybody else wants to add any criteria that I'm missing, post it.

Its Dirk plain and simple. Doesnt matter how u get the damn shot. As long as ur consistent from there.

If we're talking about mid to deep GAME then I think Durant has this locked up. Much like Dirk, KD is too big for guards to defend him. One dribble and he's popping that J overtop of them. Unlike Dirk, he can beat any big man off the dribble and create for himself or others.

IMO, what sets him apart at this distance is his ability to draw fouls. He gets those freakishly long arms tangled up in the defender and then attempts the shot, grabbing two freebies (his FT% is ridiculous too).
