Re: Who has the best deep-mid range game in the league?

I love it when guys first discover "advanced" stats and start throwing them around in discussions to prove some potential shortcoming of an elite player (usually somebody they don't like) and start using it as a gateway or trump card in every basketball topic like they know more about the subject than everybody else.

Stats are misleading and can be used to construct any argument. Anybody that studies the game and understands the dynamic nature of it and what's going on in front of them knows that when you're talking about mid-range beasts you're going to have Kobe at the top. His IQ, footwork, and ability to hit any shot under any circumstance is unmatched.

Guys like Zach Randalph and John Salmons can also put up boxscores of more points, shooting percentages, rebounds, blocks etc. But who are you going to pick when building a team or if you want to win? Kobe ?

There's also guys that show stats that a Steve Novak is a better shooter and more likely to hit the game winning 3. Get out of here with stuff like that.

Kobe is an elite shooter, like it or not.

How's this for a mid-range? I get the feeling that while guys like Dirk or Carmelo might show better percentages at the end of the day, they wouldn't make these shots and the Lakers wouldn't be repeat champions. He has the ability to bail out the team in any circumstance.

Are you guys arguing that he is efficient by justifying why he's not efficient? Interesting argument if so.

Its all amazing that Kobe is so polarizing that he hijacked this thread.

No, just that he is a very very skillful mid range player and one of the best the game has ever seen. You can have your stats because they basically mean nothing when you are between the lines.

Re: Who has the best deep-mid range game in the league?

And now the argument for why he is inefficient is because stats mean nothing.

So the two prevailing arguments for Kobe being efficient from deep-mid range are:

          1. Explaining in depth why he is inefficient.
          2. Stats mean nothing.

The NBA Forums. Where bizarro logic-based arguments happen.

Would you use your "stats mean nothing" argument to argue that Hank Aaron isn't actually the best home-run hitter baseball has ever seen or that Jerry Rice wasn't the best receiver in the history of the NFL?

Who is saying he's efficient from mid range?

I think more so people recognize that while Kobe may not be the best mid-range player, he certainly belongs in the discussion.

Also please don't try to talk down to people when you listed Derrick Rose, Caron Butler in your OP but didn't list Kobe, PP or Melo. That is much more bizarre than anything else in this thread or recently posted on this forum.

@Matrix - The forum wasn't the subject of the post, the illogic arguments were. Sorry if it sounded like I was dissing OS. Definitely wasn't my intent. More of a play on words, really.

@EX - Logically, a person that hits more shots than another while taking a similar amount of shots is more efficient. Butler and Rose took more shots from that range last year than the Kobester and they both hit more shots. You say that opinion is bizarre, and that's ok. We've been down this road before, EX.

Here is an excerpt from a previous post - to me "best" means not only being able to get the shots off but make them consistently in adverse situations. No doubt Kobe and Melo have the ability to get that shot off on anybody, regardless of the move or situation they are in. However, the other, and most important half is being able to hit that shot consistently. Neither one have proven they can, as statistically, it's just not there. Slice that how you want, it is what it is.

You need to change the title of thread from who has the best mid-range game to who shoots the highest percent from mid range. For example a guy like rip has a great mid-range shot but as for as mid-range game its non existent.

^ rip is actually a great mid range shooter, he's the ray allen of he mid range.

And i said this in the other thread:

yeah i dont get how people are debating this.

basically they are shooting AVERAGE numbers while shooting WAY ABOVE AVERAGE shots in terms of difficulty. to me that equates to a great mid range game

Look in the next paragraph in the post you quoted. IMO, there are two pieces that make up deep-mid range game, half being the ability to get enough space to get a shot off, the other being able to hit the shot consistently. Regardless of what kind of moves, quickness, height advantage, or handles a player has, if they can't hit the shot, it doesn't really matter, does it?

Is the question who has the best midrange game that extends to the three? In That case:

                            1. Nash
                            2: Kobe
                            3: Dirk
                            4: Lebron
                            5: Melo
                            6: Joe Johnson(He got a DEEEEP shot)

Dont criticize this i made it in about 37 seconds.

Yes because its more than shooting involved when you say game. Rondo cant shoot a lick but he has game.
