Haslem out, possibly for a significant part of the regular season

@Suga_Shane: Miami's season is turning into a disaster. Good thing they had their championship parade before the season started.

This just isn't good at all. Team is already looking inconsistent and just all around mediocre. Wade is hurt, Miller hurt and now Haslem.

Hurt Haslem sidelined at least until late February

The torn ligament in the left foot of Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem(notes) will at least keep him out until the All-Star break in February – and possibly for a significant portion of the regular season, a league source told Yahoo! Sports on Sunday night.Haslem will be examined by a foot specialist Monday, and that doctor will make a recommendation on whether the Heat’s top inside presence will need surgery to repair the injury. Nevertheless, the Heat and Haslem are prepared for the fact that late February and probably March are likely his earliest possible returns to the floor. If surgery is needed, the recovery could push into the spring.

Haslem suffered the injury in a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night. An MRI confirming the torn ligament was performed on Sunday in Miami.

Haslem has averaged 8.0 points and 8.2 rebounds in 13 games for the Heat, who will miss his toughness on the boards and defensive interior. The Heat will have to turn to Zydrunas Illgauskas to play more minutes in the frontcourt and use lineups that will include LeBron James(notes) at power forward.

Free-agent center Erick Dampier(notes) is still available, but Heat president Riley has only shown modest interest in him. The Heat have been willing to use point guard Mario Chalmers(notes) as a trading chip, but that had mostly been with an eye on adding another veteran point guard, front office sources said.

As long as the big three are healthy and Miller and Udo are at least 75% for the post-season, the Heat are still going to be a tough out, no matter where they're seeded.

This team really has to stay mentally tough.

Doesn't really matter. They not winning a title this season anyway. One day this team is going to be great, but right now they just don't have enough depth.

If this team has to rely on Haslem, then something is wrong down there. I understand that Haslem can contribute BUT if your season is hinging on the availability of Haslem, then you got more problems than you think you had before he was injured.

                Karma's a bitch.

I don't see how they're going to improve in the offseason when they're capped out (plus the NBA might institute a hard cap after the lockout) and they have no tradeable assets - they gave up a bunch of draft picks in LeBron/Bosh sign-and-trades.

Re: Haslem out, possibly for a significant part of the regular season

Miami still has a chance to win multiple championships as long as the big three is still around. I don’t believe they’ll win this year BUT after this year they could possibly be the next team to three-peat. I myself, feel that Erik Spoelstra is not the right coach for this team. And as much as my Filipino-side wants him to succeed, he is too much of an enabler to handle this team. A coach like Pat Riley would bring them to the promise land. However, I don’t think he’ll take over this season. He’ll ride it out with Spoelstra and then after they lose in the playoffs, Riley will take over. Riley would be risking his coaching legacy if he takes over. And with the Lakers and Celtics still being better TEAMS that too much to chance for him to come back this year. NOW, if you look at next season, the Lakers probably won’t have Phil Jackson and the Celtics will be another year older and not likely to keep up the pace they been keeping for some years now. AND with a full-offseason and training camp, Riley has plenty of time to implement a productive offense that’ll actually use the skills of the big three to win ball games.

Uh...well...as long as either LeBron and Wade are playing.

If Bosh is the only healthy one, that team is destined for a lottery pick.

                      Oh well...karma.

If there still is a mid-level exception in the new collective bargaining agreement. I've read that the owners want to get rid of it.

The Raptors own miami's 1st round pick this season. The more L's for the Heat. The higher the pick for the Raps !

Still no excuses for them though.
